ICYMI: There Are Free Historical Walking Tours at Luneta Every Month

(SPOT.ph) We all know green spaces are hard to come by in Metro Manila—but among the few we do have, Rizal Park (a.k.a. Luneta) can usually find its way to the top of the list. And honestly, it’s not hard to see why.

Spanning roughly 58 hectares, Luneta is often reduced to the Rizal Monument—arguably its most iconic landmark. But beyond that postcard-worthy spot lies so much more: gardens, promenades, and tucked-away corners, each with its own quirks and stories waiting to be uncovered. But as with most historic places, what we know isn't always the complete picture. More often than not, what truly makes them interesting is hiding in plain sight and is often overlooked. Good thing you can change that.

ICYDK, the National Parks Development Committee hosts free guided walking tours around Luneta, offering a deeper dive into the park’s history and hidden details. Here’s what to know and how to join in on the fun.

Every month, the National Parks Development Committee offers at least one free guided historical tour of Rizal Park—each one centered on a specific theme tied to a holiday or notable event that month. For example, in April, the tour's theme is Valor, a nod to the celebration of Araw ng Kagitingan; meanwhile, in October, the tour is themed 'Rizal Park Luneta sa Dilim', which NGL brings just the right amount of eerie energy just in time for Halloween, and so on, you get the drill.

These history walks are led by historians and heritage professionals who know exactly how to bring Luneta to life—serving up key facts alongside fun, lesser-known tidbits about each stop. Case in point, History Walk's first two runs this year, '[Para Hindi] MaJoHa: A Rizal Park Luneta–Paco Park GomBurZa and Love Month History Walk', and 'History Walk: Panata at Rizal Park Luneta' were both led by historian and academic Dr. Xiao Chua. In other words, this isn't just another walk in the park (pun intended). You'll walk away with a deeper appreciation of the various sites and markers around Luneta.

You can join these monthly guided tours by registering online through a link provided by the NPDC.

The registration links go up every month, about a week before the tour date. Say, in the case of last March's tour, which was scheduled on the 25th, the tour registration went up on the 18th. So if you're interested in a particular tour, make sure to note the schedule and check the NPDC's Facebook page for the link a week prior.

Tours have limited slots and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. So make sure to keep tabs on your chosen schedule and book as soon as you can.

This way, you’re not just getting your steps in and a much-needed dose of the outdoors—you’re also learning more about one of Manila’s most iconic landmarks. And if that doesn’t sound like a solid weekend plan, we don’t know what does.
