PAL Is Officially Part of the oneworld Alliance—Here's What It Means for Your Miles and Perks

(SPOT.ph) Big news for frequent Filipino flyers: Philippine Airlines (PAL) is joining the oneworld Alliance. Over the weekend in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the national flag carrier officially signed on to be the 16th member of the global alliance. It’s a massive milestone for local aviation, with PAL currently only the second Southeast Asian airline ever invited to join this exclusive club.

But what exactly does it all mean for us, the passengers? Here's everything we know.

In a nutshell, the oneworld Alliance is a global airline network currently composed of 15 member airlines that work together to provide a seamless travel experience for their passengers. It consists of many crowd-favorite airlines that many Filipinos already regularly fly with, such as Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Qantas.

As of writing, PAL is designated as a "future member." But aside from the pomp and circumstance of joining a worldwide fleet of over 3,500 aircraft, these international carriers create a shared ecosystem of seamless travel, convenience, and rewards. It’s a simple strategy: since no single airline has the fleet to fly to every city on earth, teaming up allows them to link their flight paths seamlessly. For PAL, this means unlocking a global reach of nearly 1,000 destinations across 16 airlines.

More importantly—especially for frequent flyers—loyal passengers of one carrier also get to enjoy the special privileges of all the others. Yes, joining the oneworld alliance means being able to use and earn miles across the entire network.

Now for the average Filipino traveler, joining a frequent flyer program like Mabuhay Miles means getting the occasional seat upgrades and, even rarer, a free flight. Some travelers earn enough to move into the Elite Tier, which gives them premium benefits like lounge access, bonus miles, priority check-in, and the like. But for the longest time, all of these benefits are limited to the Philippine Airlines ecosystem.

Once the oneworld membership takes effect, there’s a bounty of benefits coming our way, including shared airline miles, seamless connectivity, and even access to premium perks like priority check-in lanes, airport lounges, and many more. Here are what to expect:

• Shared Airline Miles: This is arguably the most sought-after benefit, as travelers can earn and redeem miles and points across the entire alliance network. Your hard-earned Mabuhay Miles will soon be even more valuable currency for flights on fellow member carriers such as Qatar Airways and Japan Airlines.

• Premium Perks: If you hold elite frequent flyer status with PAL, those privileges will carry over globally. That means you are essentially a top-tier passenger for 15 other airlines, too. Perks can include luxury airport lounges, priority check-in lanes, and extra baggage allowance.

• Seamless Connecting Flights: Even beyond frequent flyer programs, the oneworld membership is a win. As PAL will be part of an airline network, travelers will be able to transition between these airlines easily. You can hop on a PAL flight from Manila to Tokyo, then transfer directly to a Japan Airlines flight to the US or Europe—all on a single ticket.

But before you begin booking flights like crazy, keep in mind that the perks don’t kick in ASAP. Formal membership typically takes several months to complete, so we’re looking at 2027 for the full benefits to take effect. In the meantime, we might have to spend the year collecting miles to splurge on flights next year.

BTW, you won’t have to download 15 new travel apps or manage over a dozen loyalty accounts. The best part of the alliance is that a single membership works across the entire network. 

When booking a flight in one of the partner airlines online, it’s as simple as selecting Philippine Airlines/Mabuhay Miles from the frequent flyer options. Then, type in your existing account number. The central system instantly recognizes your membership status and automatically credits your flying points straight into your Mabuhay Miles dashboard.

Traveler benefits under oneworld also include elite priority perks, depending on three color-coded tiers: Emerald, Sapphire, and Ruby. If you’re enrolled as a top-tier frequent flyer with PAL, you’ll automatically be designated a matching Priority tier with oneworld, ranging from the baseline Ruby to the VIP-level Emerald.

Elite flyers will enjoy access to top oneworld benefits, including access to more than 700 premium airport lounges worldwide. This includes the alliance's highly acclaimed custom-branded lounges in Amsterdam’s Schiphol and Seoul’s Incheon airports.
