Catch Free Shows of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night In Makati This October

(SPOT.ph) The theater scene in Manila is buzzing. Shows have been opening nonstop and while we love it, we have to admit, ticket prices can add up fast. Luckily, theater fans can look forward to one show that won't burn a hole through your pocket.

Heads up: Makati is getting a dose of Shakespeare in the Park with a special one-weekend-only staging of Twelfth Night—and the best part? This show is free for all. Here's what you need to know.

Mark your calendars: Shakespeare in the Park is coming to Ayala Triangle from October 3 to 5 at 5 p.m. Expect an evening of wit, romance, and a little chaos as the Company of Actors in Streamlined Theater (CAST PH) brings Twelfth Night to life—Shakespeare’s comedy of love, confusion, and mistaken identities, staged under the open sky free for the theater loving public.

For the uninitiated, Shakespeare in the Park is a beloved open-air theater festival concept featuring productions of the Bard's works. It originated from the New York Shakespeare Festival in NYC's Central Park, created by American theater producer and director Joseph Papp. It has since been adapted to cover outdoor theater productions—often, free—that feature the playwright's works in general.

This staging by CAST PH stars Teia Contreras, Cholo Ledesma, Jillian Ita-as, Altair Alonso, Cathy Azanza-Dy, Tarek El Tayech, Dean Daniel Rosen, and Rafael Jimenez. They'll be taking on the characters Viola, Sebastian, Olivia, Count Orsino, and many more as they bring audiences to the fictional kingdom of Illyria, where they'll follow along with the characters as they navigate a complex love triangle ripe with disguises, cross-dressing, and misunderstandings.

Here’s a fun fact: most of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed in open-air venues like the Globe Theatre in London. And while the Ayala Triangle may not be on that historic list, it’s the perfect spot for Filipinos to experience the same communal spirit of Shakespearean theater that’s been celebrated for centuries. So grab your picnic baskets, roll out your mats, and round up your favorite people for Shakespeare in the Park this October.
