(SPOT.ph) "Order tayo ng salad para may gulay naman tayo," one says, as the multiple meaty main dishes, crunchy appetizers, and sweet desserts are finalized. For some reason, salads are still treated like a moral obligation: ordered for balance or to cancel out all the “sinful” food everyone actually wants to eat.

This list aims to retire that mindset. These salads aren’t token gestures or obligatory greens on the side; they’re dishes that can be darn delish in their own right. We've rounded up standout salads worth prioritizing over a second or third main—salads so good, they don't feel like a compromise.

Salads in Manila worth ordering for the taste

Caesar Salad from Pink's

It’s common sense to order nachos or overloaded fries to go with Pink’s hot dogs, but the restaurant’s Caesar Salad (P495) has quietly stolen part of the spotlight as the ideal counterbalance to their indulgent lineup. Pink’s keeps it classic: crisp romaine thoroughly coated in a creamy, garlicky dressing, finished with crunchy croutons and a generous snowfall of Parmesan. No gimmicks, no unnecessary add-ons—just a clean, reliable palate refresher that cuts through the richness of burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs.

Papaya Salad from Some Thai

Some Thai, recently awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand, does great modern takes on Thai food—but it also nails the classics, no reinvention required. Case in point: their Thai Papaya Salad (P220), or Som Tum. Shredded green papaya forms the crisp base, mixed with cucumber, string beans, tomatoes, dried shrimp, chilies, garlic, and peanuts. It’s all pounded and tossed in a punchy dressing that hits spicy, sweet, sour, and salty in one go.

Some Thai has two branches: the Tomas Morato branch is at the corner of Scout, 195 Tomas Morato, Sct. Fuentebella Street, Quezon City; and The Podium branch is at 12 ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City.

Chicken Caesar Salad with Bacon from S&R New York Style Pizza

S&R's Chicken Caesar Salad (P230) might look rather plain at first sight, but this is the perfect example as to why we should never judge a book by its cover. This hidden gem has a generous amount of romaine lettuce and toppings like tomatoes, carrots, chicken strips, Parmesan cheese, croutons, and bacon bits. It's then served with a Caesar dressing that leans sweet and tangy instead of aggressively anchovy-forward. For the price, portion size, and overall quality, this salad is a steal!

Octopus Salad from Duck & Buvette

If there's one common salad any salad-loving person would have on their top five salad lists in Metro Manila, it's Duck & Buvette's Octopus Salad (P620) with greens, grilled octopus, pomelo, and a spicy vinaigrette. The octopus is expertly grilled until smoky and tender—never rubbery—while the pomelo adds bright, citrusy pops that cut through the richness. That vinaigrette ties everything together with a touch of acidity to keep each bite interesting. It’s suspiciously simple, but the balance of char, freshness, and zingy spice is exactly why this salad has achieved near-cult status.

Duck & Buvette is at 2/F Shangri-La Plaza Mall, Main Wing Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.

Fiesta Taco Salad from Pancake House

Tex-Mex taco salads are the lovechild of a snack and salad—a snacklad, if you will. This salad is living proof that “salad” has always been a flexible concept, and that there has never been a hard rule on what toppings you can mix in a salad.

One of the best taco salads there is? Pancake House's Fiesta Taco Salad (P369). This is served in a big tortilla shell that serves as the edible bowl for the vegetables. Inside are mixed greens, kidney beans, grated cheddar cheese, and salty corn chips tossed in for extra crunch.

Roka Salata from Souv

In Greek restaurants—especially those under the Cyma Restaurants umbrella—freshness is practically a given, most especially when it comes to their vegetables. If you’re dining at Souv, the no-fail salad order is the Cyma Roka Salata (P510). This sweet, salty, lightly peppery mix combines arugula and romaine with sundried tomatoes, candied walnuts, and shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano. A drizzle of Greek vinaigrette ties everything together, adding brightness without overpowering the greens.

Souv has branches at: Seven/NEO Building, 5th Avenue, Bonifacio Global City; The Podium Mall, Ortigas; and Molito Lifestyle Center, Alabang.

Mario's Caesar from Mario's Restaurant

The original Mario’s Restaurant, which opened in Baguio in the early '70s, has expanded to more North branches in Pampanga and Quezon City. Lucky are those in the area who can do a quick trip to a nearby branch and order one of its signature dishes: the classic Caesar Salad (P450).

This salad has crisp romaine with Parmesan, croutons, and their own dressing prepared tableside (per tradition!) so you can actually see it made from scratch. For an extra P200, you can make the salad heftier with added grilled shrimp; or for P150, you can add smoked bacon for more flavor and crunch.

Mario's Restaurant is at 91 Tomas Morato Ave, Diliman, Quezon City.

Green Gem Salad from Chingolo Deli

The Green Gem Salad (P520) is a great companion to the steaks at Chingolo Deli. This has romaine lettuce evenly coated in the herbaceous green goddess dressing, topped with fried capers, and pistachio and almond crumble.

We've got to give this salad plus points for the no-mess approach, as each gigantic piece of green already comes individually (and evenly) coated with dressing and topped with the other ingredients.

The top-of-mind option when it comes to caesar salads? SaladStop!'s straightforward, no-frills, no-fuss Hail Caesar. This has crisp romaine, shavings of Parmesan, bacon bits, grated eggs, and crunchy croutons, then tossed in a creamy, salty, garlicky Caesar dressing that ties everything together without completely masking the greens.

What makes SaladStop!'s Caesar salad unique is the option to have it as a salad wrap—perfect if you're on the go. Another thing that sets it apart is that SaladStop provides nutritional information, should you be calculating your calorie, protein, and sodium intake.

Just in case you did not know, Heybo is a company affiliated with SaladStop! The main difference is that Heybo focuses more on warm bowls with grains, protein, vegetables, and fruits.

If you haven't tried Heybo, you can start off with the ever-impressive Sunday Roast. This has tri-color quinoa, grilled steak for your main source of protein, and for more flavors and heft, this bowl is topped with slices of roasted pumpkin, charred corn kernels, tomato salad, garlic breadcrumbs, beetroot, chipotle dip, and a drizzle of balsamic butter sauce.

Steak Salad from Wildflour

Wildflour’s Steak Salad (P995) is for people who claim they’re “just having salad” and then immediately order something with beef in it. This is a salad that understands balance—not in a lettuce-only way, but in a "you deserve protein with your veggies too" kind of way. This hits two birds with one stone... or in this case, one bowl.

The Steak Salad has tender slices of steak (from Bolzico Beef, no less) as the star of the dish; it's paired with fresh greens, cherry tomatoes, and string beans for the veg component. There's just enough bold, savory elements from the added bits of blue cheese, dates, and dressing to make every bite satisfying.

Goat Cheese Salad 2.0 from Dr. Wine

A simple way to elevate any salad is by swapping your standard cheese for premium cuts like aged Manchego, creamy burrata, or blue cheese. Dr. Wine, for one, highlights goat's cheese as a tangy, creamy counterpoint to greens in their Mr. Seguin’s Goat Cheese Salad 2.0 (P720). The cheese is supported by layers of caramelized apples for sweetness; roasted walnuts for crunch; and grainy mustard for a welcome bite. Then there’s the sourdough, sturdy enough to catch warm goat cheese as it melts and spreads.

Dr. Wine is at 5921 Algier, Makati City, and Forbestown Road, Taguig City.

Kani Salad from Tsukiji

Everyone goes to Tsukiji for the sushi and all the other fish dishes they have on the menu—and rightly so. But if you're dining as a group, order the Kani Salad (P2,000), also known as the crabstick salad.

Yes, the price tag might raise the question, "Gawa ba 'to sa ginto?" (Is this made of gold?), but you'll see the reason behind its pricing once it's served on the table. Tsukiji doesn’t skimp here: the kani is sweet and generously cut, dressed in a rich, Japanese-style mayonnaise that leans more umami than cloying. There's also the fact that the portion size makes a strong case for itself. This is a huge salad that's good for sharing between two to three people.

Tsukiji is at 3/F, Milky Way Building, 900 Antonio Arnaiz Avenue, Makati City.

Bun Thit Nuong and Cha Gio or Grilled Pork and Fried Rice Paper Rolls from Pho Hoa

If you have ever been to Vietnam or just frequent Vietnamese restaurants, then you know they go pretty hardcore with their vegetables. While you can go for a fruit-forward salad at Pho Hoa, you can also go for their pasta salad or vermicelli bowl, specifically the Bun Thit Nuong and Cha Gio or Grilled Pork and Fried Rice Paper Rolls.

This dish has cuts of deep-fried, crunchy spring rolls and slices of grilled pork as its protein sources; it's accompanied by julienned cucumbers and carrots for crunch, lying on top of vermicelli noodles. This is served with a dressing you pour all over the dish; simply toss and dig in.

Bleu Steak Salad from Texas Roadhouse

Aside from getting refills of Texas Roadhouse's popular bread with the cinnamon butter, one of the non-negotiables when at the restaurant is ordering their Blue Steak Salad (P765). This salad has crisp greens tossed in funky, pleasantly pungent bleu cheese dressing and Italian dressing, topped with more bleu cheese, raw red onions, tomatoes, deep-fried onions (basically tempura onions), and a generous amount of tender sirloin chunks. It balances sharpness, crunch, and protein, making it a filling meal on its own.

BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad from California Pizza Kitchen

If you’re looking for a salad that isn’t too too salad-y, California Pizza Kitchen’s BBQ Chicken Chopped Salad is the usual gateway order. A menu mainstay for decades, it has stubbornly held onto its title as CPK’s most popular salad—and for good reason.

True to form, it goes easy on the leafy greens and heavy on everything people actually crave: sweet corn, black beans, crunchy tortilla strips, juicy strips of grilled chicken, and a bold drizzle of barbecue sauce. You get a satisfying mix of smoky, sweet, savory, crisp, crunchy, meaty, and juicy.
