(SPOT.ph) Few things come across as universally indulgent as chocolate cake; the form in which it comes almost—almost—doesn't matter. You could have it in a simple block of the stuff with a clean, shining ganache, and sometimes that beats out the triple-tiered productions covered in candy shavings and cherries. Some baked behemoths can become the dessert-of-the-moment, although that status can of course also be achieved by sheer simplicity—see the bakery behind our number one contender in this month's Top 10 list.
But it wasn't always this way. In Mesoamerica, the cacao plant was once primarily used in medicine. Over the course of 3000 years, war and trade and all of the darker grays in the annals of history would turn the healing mixture of xocolatl (Nahuatl for 'bitter water') into the sweet treat we know and love today. The eventual mass production of cocoa powder would bring the stuff into cakes, and the cravings have since caused that simple addition to snowball into an industry nearly all its own.

There are so many great chocolate cakes around Metro Manila—close if not beyond 30 of them, from our limited measure—that I'm almost sorry that I can only present you with 10. But I also had no choice but to be cutthroat about it. I am not a dessert person—this will be the only list of sweets this year—but that does mean that I'm not out here loving every cake I come across. It's got to strike the right note of bittersweet, with a moist crumb and icing/frosting that doesn't overpower; aesthetics still play their part, although not as much as value for money.
So here are our top 10 chocolate cakes for 2026; if you'll pardon this tester, I'll be in search of some protein and vegetables.

Here are the 10 best chocolate cakes in Metro Manila right now:
10. Chocolate Cake from Cakes by Louise

Nothing screams ‘childhood’ (at least for some of you) quite like this contender. It’s the right balance of everything you’re looking for in a chocolate cake, although we do wish they were just a notch more accessible. But for the flavor and texture that Louise delivers, she passes with flying colors.
Cakes by Louise is at 8 Cebu Street, Barangay Cupang, City of Muntinlupa.
9. Tableya Chocolate Cake from Flour Pot

Visually, one might expect this beauty to have a more intense taste, but it’s actually quite approachable. It is still, however, stunning, and ticks all the boxes, including that all-important requirement of every tita you’ve ever known: Hindi masyadong matamis. According to our cover boy, it’s best paired with black coffee–and hey, he should know.
Flour Pot is at Verve Tower 2, 27th street, corner 7th Ave, Bonifacio Global City.
8. Classic Chocolate Cake from 50 & Co.
.png?fit=cover&width=960&q=82)
This runs on the sweeter side, but the intensity of cacao is definitely there. The simple swirl of the icing belies a just-distinguishable texture from the tender crumb—if you’re looking for variety in texture, you won’t find much here, but for the dessert hound that’s looking for that satisfying sink of their teeth? 50 & Co. is your first go-to.
50 & Co. is at the back of New Solid Building, 123 Jupiter Street, Makati City.
7. Decadent Chocolate Cake from Moonchild Cookie
.png?fit=cover&width=960&q=82)
Lots of small businesses have taken off relatively quickly thanks to this particular ‘format’ of cake, but they’re no less indulgent for it. Sure, some might argue that it docks points off for beauty, but is there anything cooler than the visual of a smooth, almost reflective ganache surface? Moonchild’s take has a spike of milk chocolate, caramel-y sweetness to it that can take a first timer by surprise, but it’s otherwise a cohesive bite.

6. Belgian Dark Chocolate Ganache Cake from Frank & Carol’s

In their own way, the team behind Frank & Carol’s also value presentation, although it’s evident that the priority is still flavor and texture. They’ve made these lists before and it seems there’s no stopping them; this year’s entry is rich, just the right amount of bitter, and perfectly moist—in short, it’s a no-brainer for the pure of heart and sweet of tooth.
Frank & Carol’s is at 64 Urbano Street, Barangay Road, Pasong Tamo, Quezon City.
5. Chocolate Temptation from Sunday’s Cafe and Restaurant
.png?fit=cover&width=960&q=82)
This one is pretty classic, and not too much or too little of anything; it’s also one of our favorites in terms of bang for your buck. It’s a beautiful slice for under P150—need we say more? Once again we find ourselves in the category of a great all-day breakfast place that didn’t have to go hard on the non-breakfast items, and yet they did.
Sunday’s Cafe is along J. P. Rizal Street, Marikina City.
4. Decadent Chocolate Cake from Big Al’s Cookie Jar
.png?fit=cover&width=960&q=82)
This beauty has hit top spot before, but don’t consider this a fall from grace by any means; maybe our tastes have changed, but the more likely explanation is everybody’s just innovating differently. Still, this square loaf always goes down well at a party (speaking from personal experience) and leftovers are almost never an issue—the thing is either gone or claimed before you’re halfway through the 20-minute goodbyes.

3. Moist Chocolate Cake from Sokola
.png?fit=cover&width=960&q=82)
Take the best qualities of Moonchild, Frank & Carol’s, and Big Al’s—you get Sokola. Whatever rituals they’re performing over at their bakery that A) make this flavor-beast of a cake, and B) require customers to order ahead seem to be well worth it. If you text them in the morning, though, you may just get lucky and be able to secure one the same afternoon—but that’s only if God is smiling on you that day. Some pleasures are worth planning a week or so in advance for.

2. Chocolate Cake with Fudge from Ms. Polly’s

Is anyone shocked? We’re not. Polly has found herself on this list before and this probably won’t be the last time, either. The incredible synchronicity of the taste and texture of this cake far outweigh its block-of-brown appearance, which of course has its own simplistic appeal. It’s Ms. Polly's overall quality, quintessential-ness, and, maybe more impressively, the brand’s ability to scale. ‘Better’ cakes (and menus on the whole) have flopped because of blind ambition—a word to the wise, we suppose.

1. Davao Tablea Cake from Wadough’s
.png?fit=cover&width=960&q=82)
On our list of the 50 Great Restaurants of 2025? Check. Civil ceremony approved? Check. Enough to make even a dessert hater turn? Check, check, check. It’s exceedingly clear why this bakery was chosen for the simple-yet-chic wedding cake that shook the internet, from the fluffy-moist crumb to the perfect balance—cycling through, really—of bitter and sweet.
Wadough’s is at 154 Maginhawa, Diliman, Quezon City.
