Catch Shakespeare's Macbeth for Free in Makati This October

(SPOT.ph) These days, there’s almost always a theater production running somewhere in Metro Manila. And while we’re more than happy to catch the theater bug, our wallets are already crying for mercy. But for one weekend in October, you can catch an amazing show by the folks at CAST PH without spending a single centavo, because Shakespeare in the Park is back!

Here's what you need to know about this cultural treat coming to Makati next month.

Mark your calendars: Shakespeare in the Park is coming to Ayala Triangle from October 2 to 3 at 7 p.m. and to Circuit Park on October 4, 7 p.m. Expect an evening of drama as the Company of Actors in Streamlined Theater (CAST PH) brings Macbeth to life. Shakespeare’s enduring tragedy of power, ambition, and paranoia will unfold under the open sky—and the best part? It’s free for the theater-loving public.

This staging by CAST PH stars "the first lady of Philippine musical theater," Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, in her first-ever foray as a Shakespearean character, Lady Macbeth, opposite Tarek El Tayech as Macbeth. They'll also be joined by Cholo Ledesma, Topper Fabregas, Altair Alonso, Dippy Arceo, and CAST PH's Artistic Director Nelsito Gomez, as they bring the tragedy of the Scottish general Macbeth, whose encounter with three witches and their prophecy of his rise to power consumes him and his wife to insanity and, eventually, death.

This year’s Shakespeare in the Park is part of Makati City’s Art-ober, a month-long celebration of the arts. Throughout October, Circuit Makati will host a lineup of creative talks, urban crawls, performances, and art markets celebrating everything from fine and street art to film, music, and more.

Bringing Shakespeare back to the open air feels especially fitting. After all, the Shakespeare in the Park tradition is a nod to how many of the Bard’s plays were originally staged in open venues for the public—making theater accessible, communal, and, quite literally, out in the open.

So grab your picnic baskets, roll out your mats, and round up your favorite people for a show under the stars this Art-ober—er, October!
