Spring Awakening Is Set to Open in Manila Next Year

(SPOT.ph) Theater fans, listen up, 2026's theater scene just got an Awakening—and yes, it's a big one. Right off the heels of the closing night for The Sandbox Collective's Side Show, the company just announced its 2026 season opener, and it's none other than the steamy, rock-and-roll musical Spring Awakening.

Get ready to feel all the feels—angst, love, rebellion, and that soundtrack you can’t get out of your head, as The Sandbox Collective—the folks who brought us shows like Bawat Bonggang Bagay, The Little Shop of Horrors, Tiny Beautiful Things and more—brings this cult favorite back to the Manila stage. Catch it this February 2026 at Metro Manila's newest theater, The Black Box at The Proscenium Theater in Makati. Here's what you need to know about Spring Awakening this 2026.

What is Spring Awakening all about?

For the uninitiated, Spring Awakening is a musical that explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood set to an electrifying contemporary and alternative rock score.

Set in late 19th-century Germany, the musical follows a group of teens trying to make sense of their sexuality, the nature of desires, and all the other grunge of growing up. But at a time when conversations about the birds and the bees are all but taboo, finding the answers is easier said than done.

Although Spring Awakening is originally an 1891 play of the same name by Fred Wedekind, most people know of it from its 2006 Broadway debut starring Jonathan Groff, Lea Michelle, and John Gallagher Jr. It has since gone on to win eight Tony Awards including Best Musical with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by Grammy Award-nominated recording artist Duncan Sheik. Its 2009 West End production also brought four Laurence Olivier Awards, including another Best Musical nod.

Manila's 2026 Spring Awakening marks the first Sandbox Collective show under its new artistic director Sab Jose-Gregorio. At the helm of this production is Gawad Buhay nominee Andrei Pamintuan (The Sandbox Collective’s Lungs, Sa Wakas, Fringe Manila) as director, with musical direction by Ejay Yatco (The Sandbox Collective’s Side Show, Next to Normal, Little Shop of Horrors).

Joining Pamintuan and Yatco are Nunoy Revlon as choreographer, SPIT Manila's Missy Maramara as intimacy director, Wika Nadera as designer, Raven Ong as costume designer, Gabbi Campomanes as assistant director and dramaturg, and D Cortezano as lighting designer.

As the production is in its early stages, the cast for 2026 Spring Awakening is still in the works—so much so that The Sandbox Collective is calling on interested actors for an open audition on August 31 and September 1.
