One Day Only: UP Diliman Is Offering Free Birth Control Implants and Breast Exams

(SPOT.ph) Getting access to reproductive and preventive healthcare isn’t always as easy—or as affordable—as it should be. If cost has been keeping you from getting checked, here’s one option to know about: the UP Center for Women's and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) and FriendlyCare Foundation are offering free contraceptive implant services and clinical breast examinations for one day only.

The initiative will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 18 at the UPCWGS Conference Room in UP Diliman.

For those considering the contraceptive implant, it is a small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm that continuously releases a synthetic hormone called progestin into the body. It helps prevent pregnancy by stopping ovulation and thickening cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.

Contraceptive implants are considered a highly effective, low-maintenance form of birth control that can provide protection for up to three years. If you already have an implant, the health drive also offers free implant removals.

You should be 18 years old to get a contraceptive implant during the health drive.

In addition to contraceptive care, free clinical breast examinations are also available, which are open to individuals of all ages. During the exam, a healthcare professional checks the breasts and surrounding areas for lumps or other unusual changes that may need further evaluation.

Slots for both services are limited, so interested participants should register early via the online form.

Before signing up for an implant, though, there are a few eligibility requirements to know. Medical personnel will not be able to administer the implant to individuals who weigh 34 kilograms (75 pounds) or less.

The procedure is also unavailable for anyone currently taking medications for tuberculosis (TB) or epilepsy, as well as patients with goiter who are not on maintenance medication or under regular medical supervision.

Additionally, those currently using injectable contraceptives with more than two months remaining before their dose expires are ineligible for the implant during this drive. The same applies to individuals who have had unprotected sexual contact prior to their period without using family planning methods, such as pills, injectables, or condoms.
