Heads Up, Commuters: You Can Get Free LRT and MRT Rides Until December 25

(SPOT.ph) Metro Manila traffic during the holidays is no joke. It’s the kind of gridlock that makes anyone think twice about bringing a car out. Here’s one more reason to make the switch to public transportation: a Libreng Sakay initiative for all train lines starts next week.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is rolling out “12 Days of Christmas” free train rides on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 from December 14 to 25—each day dedicated to a different group of commuters before opening it up to everyone on Christmas Day.

DOTr told SPOT.ph that commuters will still tap their cards at the gate, but station staff will hand out a separate card at the turnstiles to validate that the ride is part of the Libreng Sakay program.

Instead of a single one-off promo, DOTr spread out the free rides so people can time their errands, last-minute shopping, or trips to work depending on when they qualify. The schedule is set and straightforward:

December 14 – Senior citizens
December 15 – Students
December 16 – OFWs and their families
December 17 – Teachers and health workers
December 18 – PWDs and male passengers
December 19 – Government employees

December 20 – Female passengers
December 21 – Families (no limit on members)
December 22 – Solo parents and LGBTQIA+ members
December 23 – Private sector employees and kasambahay
December 24 – Uniformed personnel, veterans, and their families
December 25 – Everyone

How the train crews will even verify if you’re part of that day’s group is anyone’s guess, but the offer stands—and if you fall under the category for the day, you get a free ride.

Adjusted train schedules are also in effect this month, with LRT-2 extending its operating hours starting December 9 for the holiday rush. You can view the complete list of operating hours below.
