(SPOT.ph) If you’re a senior citizen or a person with a disability (PWD) commuting on the train lines, you don’t have to keep flashing your ID to get a discount. Instead, you can apply for a beep card that will automatically deduct 50% from your fare every time you tap in.

This follows the government’s recent move to increase fare discounts for seniors and PWDs from 20% to 50% across LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3. The change was announced in July as part of efforts to make daily commuting more affordable for vulnerable sectors—and yes, the discount applies even on weekends and holidays.

So, how do you get your hands on this concessionary beep card? The process isn’t instant, but it’s straightforward—just make sure to bring the right documents and a bit of patience.

How to get a beep card with senior citizen and PWD discounts

Prepare the requirements

Bring an original and photocopy of your Senior Citizen ID or PWD ID. Make sure it shows your name and ID number as you’ll need to present both the original and a copy.

Head to your nearest station—it could be the LRT-1, LRT-2, or MRT-3—and look for either the Commuter Welfare Desk or a teller’s booth. These are typically located near the entrance or ticketing area.

Ask for the concessionary registration form

Inform the staff that you’d like to apply for the concessionary beep card. They’ll give you a registration form to fill out.

Keep in mind that each eligible commuter is allowed only one concessionary Beep card. The card is non-transferable, so only the registered holder is allowed to use it. Lending your card to someone else, even a family member, can lead to confiscation or penalties under Beep’s terms and conditions.

Pay the fee

After filling out the form, submit it along with your photocopied ID to the staff. You’ll be asked to pay a P30 one-time issuance fee for the personalized card. This fee is for the processing and encoding of your senior or PWD status onto the Beep card, allowing the automatic fare discount to kick in during every train ride.

Claim the card

Once your documents are submitted and the fee is paid, you’ll receive a claim stub with a date written on it. Card processing typically takes 7 to 10 working days, so don’t lose the stub—you’ll need it to claim your card.

On the scheduled date, return to the same station and present your stub to pick up your personalized card.

Load the card

Your new card is just like a regular beep card in the color white—you’ll need to load it with credit, but the 50% discount will automatically apply every time you tap in and out. The card is valid for four years from the date of issuance.
