You Can Now Renew Your Expiring Beep Card on Your Phone—Here’s How

(SPOT.ph) Most commuters already have a beep card in their wallet, bag, or tucked somewhere they only remember when it’s time to tap in. What many may not realize is that these cards can expire—and that you can actually renew it on your phone.

beep says expiring cards can now be extended through the beep app using its “Card Expiry Extension” feature. The main catch is that your phone has to support NFC, since the process involves scanning the actual card on your device rather than simply typing in the card number. We’ve included a list below so you can check if your phone is compatible.

For most users, the renewal fee is P10. According to beep, this can be paid using your existing load balance or through payment options such as Maya, BPI, and GCash, but extra convenience fees will apply. Meanwhile, senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWD) using white concessionary beep cards can renew them through the app at no cost.

First, download the beep app on iOS and Android. If you already have it installed, make sure you update it to the latest version so you can access the new feature.

Inside the app, tap the “Card Expiry Extension” icon, then scan your card using your phone’s NFC reader. After that, choose how you want to pay the renewal fee, check the details on screen, and confirm the payment.

Once the payment goes through, you’ll need to scan the card again so the new expiry date can be written onto the card itself. The final screen should show that the extension is being processed, along with the updated expiry date.

There are limits on when the feature can be used. You can only renew your beep card within six months before its original expiry date, which is printed on the back of the card. The extension adds one year to the card’s validity. Plus, renewal can only be done once, so this isn't something you can keep repeating as the date gets closer.

For example, a card with an original expiry date in May 2026 may be renewed anytime from November 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026, with the new expiry date moved to May 2027.

This update comes just after beep began pulling out several old card machines from LRT and MRT stations, including some units used for card renewal. This new option gives commuters another way to deal with expiring cards without depending on whichever machine is still left at the station.

Since this feature only works on NFC-enabled devices, compatibility is the first thing commuters will want to check. beep has a list of supported phone models on its official website, which we lay out below.

As for iPhones, all models from the iPhone 7 onward have NFC, but NFC Tag Reader may need to be enabled for background tag reading. On iPhone XS, XR, and newer models, that feature is already enabled automatically.
