It’s Official: May 27, 2026 Is a Regular Holiday

(SPOT.ph) The Malacañang Palace has officially declared May 27 as a regular holiday throughout the country in observance of Eid'l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Proclamation No. 1264 was issued following the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos' (NCMF) recommendation that May 27 be a national holiday based on the 1447 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar. 

“As Muslims around the world welcome these sacred days of devotion, sacrifice, and reflection, the Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta’ calls upon the Ummah to maximize this blessed season through sincere worship, prayers, fasting, charity, and acts of compassion and unity,” Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta, the Islamic authority in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), said in an announcement earlier this week.

Eid’l Adha is one of the two greatest feasts of Islam, the other being Eid'l Fitr.

Since May 27 is a Wednesday, that gives us a midweek break.

Eid'l Adha is one of the most significant Islamic holidays worldwide. It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command. 

The holiday occurs annually at the end of the Hajj pilgrimage, on the 10th day of the Islamic lunar month of Dhul Hijjah. The celebration of Eid'l Adha includes special prayers, communal gatherings, and the ritual sacrifice of an animal such as a sheep, goat, cow, or camel.

Under Republic Act 9849 which declares Eid'l Adha a regular holiday, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos under the Office of the President can recommend the date for the national holiday.

Employers are obligated to pay workers the normal daily rate on regular holidays.

If an employee reports for work on that day, they should be paid twice the normal daily rate. Overtime work will also have to be compensated with 2.6 times the hourly rate and the number of excess hours.

Those without regular employment such as seasonal workers may not be paid the required holiday pay when they are not called to work. If an employee is paid per output, the holiday pay should not be less than the employee's average daily earnings for the last seven working days before the regular holiday.
