This Cyberpunk-Style Mural in BGC is a Tribute to the Filipino Riding Community
By local artist Glenford Lumbao.
“Meet me at the corner of 30th Street and 9th Avenue!” There's something about the way streets are named in Bonifacio Global City—it's satisfying and sensible, but it's not what Filipinos are used to. Picking (and remembering) a meet-up spot can be difficult.
But now, with a 45-foot mural presently watching over that very corner, your friends will easily understand when you ask to meet up at the big painting.
Created by local visual artist Glenford Lumbao, the cyberpunk-style art adorning the side of W Global Center was commissioned by Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc. in collaboration with the Bonifacio Art Foundation.
Named “Own the Culture”, the mural focuses on Yamaha’s popular Mio automatic motorcycles and depicts different kinds of owners who enjoy the two-wheeled lifestyle: VR gamer, adrenaline junkie, artist, fashionista, chef. The geometric shapes and bold palette make the mural immediately jump off the wall—you definitely won’t miss this landmark.
We owe a lot to the bravery and the hard work of the riding community–they have been essential in helping society weather out this pandemic. But the mural is a celebration of their lives beyond those heroic efforts as well, highlighting the joy inherent to owning a Yamaha Mio.
With the bold typography asking “What’s your culture?” in the middle of colorful angular depictions of life on a Mio, it’s a reminder that members of the riding community come from vibrant and varied backgrounds.
Finding scenic spots and sharing the experience of long rides out to discover them–these are things that Filipino riders definitely love doing. The supersized BGC mural does double duty as a celebration of that culture and as another fun landmark around which Mio owners can gather. It’s conveniently located on top of a parking lot, after all.
It’s also a clever reminder from Yamaha, which chose to show its appreciation for the Mio community in a format that every single member can actually take part in. If you want to see the mural for yourself (to snap photos, as we’ve already seen several proud Mio owners doing), it’s very easy to look up and take it all in–while on a bike, of course.
If you don’t have your own yet though, and you think the Mio scene is calling out to you, then hit the link to check out the full range of automatic models online or visit your local Yamaha dealership today.
One more thing: Yamaha Mio will soon launch a social media contest (Hint: It has something to do with the mural!) where Apple airpods, iPads, and Yamaha merch are up for grabs, so keep checking the Yamaha Motor Philippines, Inc. Facebook page for updates. See you at 30th corner 9th!
