Everything You Need to Know About the Barbie x Carry Om Collab

(SPOT.ph) We love a good collab—even better if it features two brands with their own character and style. Local bagmaker Carry Om has been teasing one these past few days with videos and posts drenched in pink and we finally have an answer. Get ready for the Carry Om x Barbie bags to drop soon!

Carry Om is no stranger to collabs. Last year, they collaborated with local artists to give customers a chance to customize their own Mala bags while championing Filipino art and talent. The Barbie collab, however, is the brand's first time link arms with a globally-know brand and icon.

As Houston poet, philosopher, and baddie Lizzo once said, "We like all the colors, but pink just looks so good on us." According to posts on their socials, the collab bags will officially launch on August 29 to 30.

There will be 15 drops spread across two days, from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Open Space in Makati. Titled Carry Om Goes Pink, the shopping event will also have a VIP hour from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on both dates for a chance to shop ahead everyone else. You can sign up for VIP hour on their website.

All of the Barbie Carry Om bags will sport a special collab tag in different hues of pink. Some colorways are more pink than others, but still undeniable Barbie, so folks who love other colors aside from pink can get their fix. Five silhouettes have gotten the Barbie treatment as of writing, and we'll talk about them one by one.

A hot new bombshell has entered Barbie's dream house. Meet Lila (P24,950), the star of the Barbie Carry om collection. Available in six flashy colorways, the Lila features the biggest fluffy bow ever created on a Carry Om bag. Two heart-shaped pockets keep it functional and lovely, while 15 other pockets make up the bag for maximum organization. Some bags have an obvious front and back, but Lila's appeal is that it has none. The large bow can be the star of an outfit, or the heart pockets can do the talking. Not feeling the bow on certain days? You can switch it out with a utility strap that's included with every purchase, or even replace it with a strap from your own colletion.

The beloved Mala is also part of the collab, boasting not one, not two, but seven different colorways, all with touches of pink in varying hues. The surprisingly spacious tote is available in Medium for P3,450 and Large for P3,950, and features interior pockets and exterior loops. Each bag is reversible, but only three feature fabric with a Barbie print. Mala bags with the Barbie print are available in Medium for P4,450 and Large for P4,950.

Can't get enough of the Mala's loops? Perhaps the Mala Ribbon is more up your alley. It utilizes the Mala's silhouette and functionality, but what sets it apart are the bows running down the bag, as if attached to the loopy spine. It's every bit fun and funky and adds oomph to a classic. It's also available in Medium for P3,950 and Large for P4,450, and comes in a whopping 15 different colorways because Carry Om loves options.

The Mala carries a lot as is, but those who bring everything but the sink could be wishing for more pockets. The Mala Max is the Mala on steroids (and we mean that in the best way possible). Instead of the signature loops, the Mala Max comes with four extra exterior pockets and elastic bands for bringing oddly-shaped items like maybe a picnic or yoga mat, and even a plushie. There are four colorways for the Mala Max, each one reversible and with a touch of the Barbie print. It comes in both Medium priced at P9,950 and Large priced at P10,950.

Last but not the least is the Gaura (P22,950), a large tote that transforms into a backpack. Carry it with the top handles or switch to the shoulder straps for balanced weight on your body. Pockets abound inside and out, and it also has loops and a D-ring for keys, attachments, and other anik-anik. Take your pick from four different colorways.

Longtime Carry Om fans know how rare touches of pink are. The label’s pieces show hints of pink here and there, but rarely do they release a silhouette decked in different hues of the rosy shade. If you’re a first-time Carry Om buyer with a penchant for pink, we’ll let you know right now that this release may never happen again, or take a while to come around later on.

Unlike other brands that choose to use specific colors and materials every time, Carry Om upcycles what’s available, meaning their bags’ signature colorblock is dependent on what ends up being thrown out and eventually picked up by their team to repurpose. Pink is rarely discarded, so when they come across it, they make it clear that a particular colorway is limited and difficult to replicate.

"Finding upcycled pink is rare, so when we get our hands on it, we treat it like gold. We’ve saved up our entire stash for a drop that deserves its own spotlight," they said in a teaser.

The same holds true for all their other colorways, but moreso for those with pinks. We can only imagine how long it must have taken to gather different fabrics and swatches to make the Barbie bags. Pink lovers, trust us when we say you have to set alarms and have a game plan for this drop.
