Baguio City Gem Mile-Hi Center Is Back After a 6-Year Closure

(SPOT.ph) 90s kids and those who grew up in the early 2000s know that a trip to Baguio City isn't complete without a stop at Camp John Hay. With its pine-filled trails, family-friendly attractions, and endless dining options, a John Hay detour felt almost mandatory—and a meal or shopping run at the Mile-Hi Center was always a highlight. Sadly, those memories have been on pause, with the center closing its doors six years ago after time wasn’t too kind to it.

But we come bearing good news! It's time to make new memories at Camp John Hay's Mile-Hi Center as the complex has been revitalized and reopened this month. Here's what to expect when you visit the Mile-Hi Center in Camp John Hay. 

ICYDK, The Mile-Hi Center was the place for shopping, playing, and dining in Camp John Hay. For years, the center's commissary, outlet shops, and restaurants have been a part of the ultimate Baguio itinerary, where you can shop imported chocolates, alcohol, and garments, eat at Baguio staple restaurants, play arcade games, billiards, and even bowling at some point, all under one roof.  It remained unchanged for years, even decades, until it was eventually closed down some six years ago. 

In the time since its closure, Camp John Hay has undergone major changes, with its operations and ownership returning to the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) after a nine-year legal feud with the private developer Camp John Hay Development Corporation (CJHDevCo). And while most facilities like The Manor and Forest Lodge are business as usual, the change of hands resulted in The Mile-Hi Center's much-needed renovation and redevelopment. 

Today, the Mile-Hi area has been renewed and infused with fresh energy. The building housing the retail and dining spaces has since been restored and renovated with new spaces while still honoring the original structure.  

According to BBZ, the contract between them and the BCDA is short-term in nature. Exactly how long that is, we're not sure. But based on reports about the initial bid proposal, it might be under a 25-year lease. Regardless, we're here for this development, and maybe a new generation of Baguio tourists will make new core memories at this new and improved oldie but goodie. 

Anyone who’s been to Camp John Hay knows that getting around usually means driving your own car or hailing a taxi—unless you’re game for some uphill walks. These days, though, it’s much easier thanks to the John Hay Loop, a free shuttle service that runs daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. So if you suddenly feel like heading to Mile-Hi Center from another part of the camp, just hop on the loop and you’re good to go.
