All Commuters Get 50% Fare Discount on LRT-2 and MRT-3

(SPOT.ph) Fuel prices are going up again—but life doesn’t exactly stop when that happens. You still have to get to work, school, or wherever else you need to be. For people thinking twice about driving, there’s one more reason to consider commuting next week: Fares on LRT-2 and MRT-3 will be cut by 50% starting March 23.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said the discount applies whether you’re using a Beep Card or buying a Single Journey Ticket—so you don’t need to do anything extra to avail of this discount. For regular passengers, the reduced fare will be automatically applied when using a Beep Card. Those without one can still buy Single Journey Tickets at stations at half the usual price.

As for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and students, nothing changes: They will still get the same 50% discount through white Beep Cards.

The fare cut follows a directive from Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., with the government framing the move as a way to ease daily commuting costs. The timing comes as fuel prices continue to surge, with diesel expected to reach over P100 per liter amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

For now, the discount only covers LRT-2 and MRT-3. The DOTr said it is still in discussions with the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), which operates LRT-1, on whether the same reduced fares can be implemented there.

No end date has been announced for the 50% discount, so commuters who rely on these lines may want to make the most of it while it’s in place.

Here's a look at the current fares for the LRT-2, and MRT-3 for regular commuters:

• LRT-2: P13.29 boarding fare, plus P1.21 per kilometer.  Single Journey Tickets range from P15 to P35.  

• MRT-3: Uses distance-based fares, starting at P13 for short trips and going up to P28 for end-to-end rides. 

With the new 50% fare discount, passengers can now pay as little as P8 for a quick LRT-2 ride or P14 for the entire stretch of MRT-3. Here's the full breakdown:
