Ube Is the Star of This PH-Exclusive Mexico 66 Pair from Onitsuka Tiger

(SPOT.ph) Filipinos love their ube—in all shapes and forms. Of course, we can't get enough of the taste, but the rich, deep purple color is enough to entice us even before we take a bite. In this case, the ube in question won't be on a plate or found in a traditional oval-shaped aluminum pan, but across Onitsuka Tiger shoes.

For the uninitiated, the Mexico 66 VIN is a more textured, vintage version of the cult-fave Mexico 66 pairs. It still breathes the same slim silhouette and, of course, the side tiger stripes, but is made to look more lived-in through the leather upper and styling. It ties to the nostalgia of the new Philippine-exclusive Mexico 66 VIN in Cream and Violet (P9,800), inspired by the classic Filipino dessert staple and a childhood treat we all love to eat.

The Onitsuka Tiger stripes this time around are in suede, which adds more texture and a premium look to the shoe. The color is in different shades of violet that don't scream in your face, but are enough to stand out from the cream-colored upper.

On the insole is a print inspired by Pakudos, a traditional, symmetrical, geometric motif of the Mangyan people, that adds more of the Filipino heritage and craftsmanship.

The Mexico 66 isn't one to be left behind. For the Mexico 66 in Cream and Yellow Orange (P9,400), the lightweight shoe everyone loves has its stripes dressed in a vibrant yellow-and-orange palette that is inspired by Filipino jeepneys and sari-sari stores. Inside, too, is a traditional Pakudos-inspired print in the same colorways.

But that's not all; there are also tees included in the Philippine-exclusive drop called the Halo-Halo Graphic Tees (P5,500), putting the spotlight this time on another Filipino dessert through playful and vibrant illustrations. The tee is available in black and white.

Onitsuka Tiger's Mexico 66 VIN (Cream/Violet) and Mexico 66 (Cream/Yellow Orange) retail at P9,800 and P9,400, respectively, and are available at Onitsuka Tiger stores in Greenbelt 2, Glorietta, Shangri-La Plaza, SM Megamall, Two Parkade, SM Aura, SM Mall of Asia, Ayala Malls Manila Bay, SM Lanang, and Abreeza.
