Bigger Cover Screen, Great Battery Life: All the Things We Love About the Z Flip7

(SPOT.ph) It’s no secret that a lot of past trends are making comebacks and getting love, especially in the fashion scene. Heck, even tech and gadgets like old-school film cameras and Polaroids are all the rage—most of them, if not all, with better, modern features, because combining the best of both worlds is possible these days.

In this case, though, and probably one of the best examples of it, are the modern flip phones and South Korean tech giant Samsung’s contributions to its continuous innovation. It's foldable flagship series, the Galaxy Z Series, with its latest iteration, the Z Flip7 only improves on past versions.

The Z Flip7 was launched alongside another flip phone (albeit horizontal), the Z Fold7, during this year's second Samsung Galaxy Unpacked, which also saw the launch of the latest iterations of the Galaxy Watches: the Galaxy Watch8 and Galaxy Watch8 Classic.

The Z Flip7 is said to be "the most advanced Z Flip ever." It's a compact, small (when folded) but mighty phone packed with multimodal AI features.

In the Z Flip7, the FlexWindow, a.k.a the Z Flip series' cover screen, has become bigger and better. The biggest and brightest, so they said. From the 3.4-inch screen of its predecessor, the Z Flip6, it became a 4.1-inch, with Super AMOLED and 2,600 nits of peak brightness.

The Z Flip7 also has the largest battery ever on a Z Flip phone, because, of course, battery life is important. It is equipped with a 4,300mAh battery capacity with up to 31 hours of video playtime. For comparison, the Z Flip6 has 4,000mAh of battery capacity.

The Z Flip7 is also equipped with a dual rear camera system that offers a 50MP Wide and a 12MP Ultra-Wide lens.

When it comes to AI features, Gemini Live can also be accessed through the bigger FlexWindow. It enables voice searches and task companions. The FlexWindow can also give you your day at a glance through the Now Brief, and can give you personalized summaries regarding traffic, health, reminders, and even playlists.

For colorways, the Z Flip7 is available in Blue Shadow, Jetblack, and Coral Red. The Mint version is an online exclusive. For storage, you can choose between 256GB and 512GB.

The Z Flip7 also has the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE, which is a more accessible flip phone when it comes to price point. It features a 6.7-inch main display with a 50MP FlexCam. It's available only in two colors: black and white, and prices start at P56,990.

First things first, the folding magic. Though it always feels like I could snap it in half, it's still as cool as ever to be able to fold the screen without breaking. It's that light and thin, weighing just 188 grams and measuring only 13.7mm when folded.

The hinge or dent in the middle is now less noticeable. We got to test out the Blue Shadow colorway, which makes the phone—thin and sleek in itself—cooler and more sophisticated.

The most noticeable change in the Z Flip7 is the FlexWindow, which can pass as a usual phone screen, given how big it is and how much you can see without opening up your phone (though you will, for the flip phone flair), like the Now Brief and Gemini. For one, the bigger screen gives you more space to type on the keyboard. The screen takes up the whole surface, even spilling to the camera.

It's not just the size that has improved. The performance is smooth and nice, too, with up to 120Hz refresh rates. The 2,600 nits brightness makes it easier for me to check my notifications under sunlight.

We tested the battery capacity of the Z Flip7, and it lasted two days with maximum use. For a regular charger—one without fast-charging capabilities—it takes more than an hour to fully charge, even at 30%.

And since it's Samsung, the camera quality is still good. Not as much improvement from the Z Flip6 from last year, but still OK. They still capture clearer and vivid details, like my pores, for example. The larger cover screen makes it even easier when you want to take selfies through the FlexWindow. Hands-free shooting and shooting alone (and making sure every picture and video is on point) are also made easier with the AI Zoom.
