(SPOT.ph) More than two years since its opening, Opus Mall's lifestyle concept store Spatio has gathered over 400 local and international brands across its three-story space. Around 300 of them are proudly homegrown—a diverse, well-curated mix of local favorites, designer labels, and emerging names in apparel, bags and accessories, and, of course, footwear—and take up most of the space.

Recently, a handful of Marikina-made footwear brands have joined the ranks, all of them tucked in a corner of the first level of Spatio: Shoe Avenue.

If you live in Marikina, you're probably familiar with Shoe Avenue. It's a street where you cannot only buy shoes but also learn how to make them. It was where the city's shoemaking culture came alive. This new concept space in Spatio gives more people a glimpse into what Marikina has been offering all this time, now made accessible to more people beyond the city. It's where the past, present, and future of the city's shoemaking heritage and, by extension, Philippine footwear, meet.

"Shoe Avenue is our way of honoring what came before us, drawing inspiration from what continues to be made today, and envisioning what Philippine footwear can still become," Unyx Sta. Ana, Zapateria's founder, says. Spatio's Shoe Avenue is in collaboration with Zapateria, who had been preserving and supporting Marikina's shoemaking industry since 1887. "Marikina carries generations of skill, knowledge and stories, and that story is still being written."

"Together with Spatio, we're creating a platform where these stories can be experienced by more people."

The brands and our top picks from Shoe Avenue

Zapateria

Zapateria is more than just a store—it's the Philippines' first creative hub for footwear design and development. They specialize in custom-fit, made-to-order pairs, but they also have ready-made silhouettes and styles, and even have workshops that help creatives make their own shoes. You can find these pairs lined up in Shoe Avenue, with pre-order forms on-site for customization.

One of the styles that caught our attention is Odette (P9,800), which is their version of the Mary Janes. It breathes the classic T-strap design, made of real leather and custom-molded chunky soles that give the usually dainty pair a rugged, heavy-duty vibe.

The leather-cage upper and chunky outsole of Alunsinag's Gabby Sandals (P6,490) will definitely steal hearts (and for some, wallets) at the space. Founded in 2024, Alunsinag's pieces boast of the perfect balance between aesthetics and craftsmanship; blending modernity and tradition. In their lineup are boots, heels, sandals, oxford mules, and mules—one of which is the Pya Mules that won two coveted awards at the 5th Global Footwear Awards, a prestigious international program that recognizes the best in the shoe industry.

Bida Loca has been around since 2020 and their playful accessories—from wristbands to lanyards—and bags featuring their signature bobbles also grace Shoe Avenue alongside their sandals. The Flipette Sandals (P5,000), for one, take center stage. They're not just your simple sandals; the pairs, made from genuine cowhide leather, are covered in studs across the straps for that added touch of edge. If you don't want the studs, there's an option without them.

Gents looking for leather dress shoes for the important days will find their fill at Bucroe's corner. The brand's ready-to-wear pairs, alongside other leather offerings like belts and pouches, are waiting for you here. Bucroe started in 1978 as a mass-production shoemaker before turning into a bespoke house specializing in custom-fit leather dress shoes that are as comfortable as they are sleek, so they know a thing or two about making shoes!

Charis

Charis brings more color and culture into the Shoe Avenue brand lineup through pieces that put traditional local textiles up front and center in their designs, then blending it with Marikina's craftsmanship. Their debut Hiraya Mules can be found on the site; their vibrant uppers catch the attention of everyone who visits.

Since launching in 2025, HAYO has been bringing the warmth and familiarity of Filipino culture and shared experiences into their pieces.

For their footwear catalog, HAYO has sneakers, mules, and sandals—one of which is the Siesta Sandals (P3,990), which are also present at Shoe Avenue. The pairs are said to be inspired by the summers we never wanted to end; the Alapaap variant, to be more specific, has blue straps that remind us of the blue skies. It features a full-grain upper with supple fabric paired with a hand-stitched footbed.

POSH Pocket Shoes

POSH Pocket Shoes has been providing people with understated and comfortable pairs that can walk with you through life's daily adventures since 2010. Their space at Shoe Avenue is the first time in a long time that their shoes have been available inside a mall. We spotted most of their silhouettes on site, but the New Day in Tomato Red Leather (P3,190) was definitely eye-catching.

The New Day—with its buttery soft leather, signature double-padded insoles, and simple slip-on style—gives plenty of reasons to have it in your cart, but the tomato red colorway just makes another bold statement. It's available for pre-order.

There's also something for the little explorers at Shoe Avenue. Cute, tiny, and colorful toddler shoes from Wumwum fill a corner of Shoe Avenue. Wumwum's pieces show families that their kids should also experience the same comfort and delight, courtesy of experts in the craft.

Their debut Rascal Sneakers, which are two-strap toddler shoes, are lightweight and breathable, with a wide toe box and flexible sole to accompany the littles on their fun adventures.

Where to find Shoe Avenue at Spatio

Shoe Avenue is on the first level of Spatio, located on the second floor of Opus Mall, Bridgetowne Boulevard, corner C-5 Road, Barangay Ugong Norte, Bridgetowne Destination Estate, Quezon City.
