One Night Only: Sing Your Heart Out at This Musical Theater Open Mic Night in Makati

We get it, it can be tempting to belt out that eleven o'clock number, especially if it hits too close to home, but trust us when we say it's best left to the professionals. But what if there was a night where you could just grab the mic and channel your inner Elphaba, or Evan Hansen, and just let it all out—sans the judgement from your seatmates?

Introducing, The Sandbox Collective's Sing Awakening, a musical theater open mic night. Here's what you need to know.

Get ready to belt your heart out on stage at the first-ever Sandbox BTS: Open Mic Night, happening on March 4, at the Sari-Sari Speakeasy Bar in Makati.

For just P700, expect a fun night where you can now take the stage and sing your favorite musical theater songs with fellow fans—being in tune is optional. This one-night-only event is the perfect opportunity to sing along to your favorite theater hits sans any judgements from your seatmates because this time, you're encouraged to sing along with the crowd. Each ticket comes with a free drink, which you can use to lube up your vocal cords or for a bit of liquid courage.

Not only will you be with fellow fans, but you'll also have the chance to hang out with the cast of The Sandbox Collective's latest show: Spring Awakening. Imagine singing Bitch of Living with cast members like Alex Diaz, Nic Chien, and Omar Uddin, that just sounds like a good time, if you ask us.

Although the open mic night is themed with Spring Awakening in mind (Sing Awakening, isn't a typo), that doesn't mean you can't choose songs from other shows. As long as it's a piece from the theater, then you're all set.

Once there, just input your details, including your go-to musical theater Karaoke track, and you're all set. A representative from The Sandbox Collective will reach out to you on how you can settle the registration fee separately.

Hosted by the Sandbox Collective's Head of Audience Development and theater actor Reb Atadero, this open mic night is a great way for thespians and their fans to connect and share their love for theatricality and musicality in a let-down-your-hair-and-let-loose kind of way.

This marks the second Sandbox BTS event, following the quiz night the group mounted in February. For Atadero, who leads Beyond the Stage for The Sandbox Collective, the goal is clear: “I want [Sandbox: Beyond the Stage] to be a hangout spot for those who live and breathe the stage—and for those looking for an avenue into theatre, which can sometimes feel intimidating.”

In other words, whether you’re a full-fledged theater kid or just theatre-curious, this is shaping up to be a welcoming space to geek out over musicals and your favorite stage shows. And yes, Spotters—we’ll be keeping tabs for you.
