Heads Up: Hong Kong Disneyland Is Getting an Exclusive Pixar Show and New Avengers Attractions

(SPOT.ph) There’s a reason returning to Disneyland over and over again never gets old—there is always something new to experience. Soon, the closest Disney park to the Philippines will receive major Pixar and Marvel upgrades, giving Filipinos an excellent excuse to plan a trip. From a fresh theatrical experience at Toy Story Land to an epic Avengers drop tower ride, Hong Kong Disneyland is definitely stepping up its game.

Unveiled during the D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, these new attractions are already in the works. Here is what we know so far about these exclusive Hong Kong Disneyland expansions coming soon.

About a year ago, as Hong Kong Disneyland was celebrating its 20th anniversary, its Managing Director, Michael Moriarty, announced major developments coming to the park's Toy Story Land. In an Instagram post, Moriarty talked about bringing an "all-new, exclusive Pixar entertainment experience" to the park—but that was it. Now, a little over a year later, we finally have an update: Meet Poppy—because isn't it about time the Pixar crew gets a new addition?

The park’s Toy Story Land is set to debut an all-new theater experience introducing Poppy, a new Pixar character with her own original story. As the story goes, the plush toy and her human, Aria, move from Hong Kong to Andy’s neighborhood, setting the stage for adventures with Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang.

Making it even more special for visitors, the production is exclusive to Hong Kong Disneyland, which means you’ll have to make the trip to meet Poppy. Eagle-eyed locals may even spot clever cultural references like Xiangqi chess pieces and paper kites. But perhaps the biggest nod to Hong Kong culture is that the initial sketches presented at a D23 press conference show Poppy resembling a Chinese Pangolin. Seeing as Hong Kong is one of the few places in the world with a wild Pangolin population, showcasing Poppy as one is a sweet nod to Hong Kong's biodiversity.

There will also be at least two new songs that will be played around the park and during the shows co-created by Disney Live Entertainment teams in Hong Kong and the US.

The best part? We don't even have to wait too long to meet Aria and Poppy. This new theatrical adventure is slated to debut in the first half of 2027.

If you’re less about the toys and more about superpowered action, then the expansions happening at Tomorrowland might be a better fit.

Thrill-seekers will be happy to know that Hong Kong Disneyland is adding an adrenaline-fueled attraction to its Marvel lineup.

We're proud to say we called it! Finally, Hong Kong Disneyland is getting a Tower of Terror-esque ride. In D23 2024, Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, announced the Marvel land expansion with concept art of Spider-Man saving an elevator full of passengers from Doc Ock's grasp, and while Disney didn't reveal the full details then, we got a hunch they were going this route.

As announced at D23, the ride is set inside the Avengers Research Testing Labs where Tony Stark and company develop tools to combat future threats. Naturally, this catches the attention of evil forces, and soon, an action-packed battle featuring Spider-Man alongside heroes from Wakanda, Asgard, and more ensues.

In real life, that means a stomach-turning free-fall experience against a 120-foot-tall media screen, as riders plummet through different realms alongside their favorite superheroes.

The ride is just one phase of the multi-year plan to reinvigorate the Avengers' space in Tomorrowland. In addition to the new ride, the Avengers pavilion will feature a new Quinjet landing platform. It is where visitors can encounter iconic Marvel heroes, such as Thor, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Captain America.

Although all of this sounds exciting, we'll have to wait with bated breath a little bit longer. An official opening date for the Marvel expansion has yet to be announced, but don't worry. Word is Disney Imagineers are already on-site, and preparations are currently underway.
