Miss Philippines Venus Raj is 4th runner-up in Miss Universe 2010; Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete takes the crown

Miss Mexico Jimena Navarrete, 22, won the Miss Universe 2010 pageant held today, August 24 (Philippine time), at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The Philippines' Venus Raj was named 4th runner-up, Ukraine's Anna Poslavska 3rd runner-up, Australia's Jesinta Campbell 2nd runner-up, and Jamaica's Yendi Phillipps 1st runner-up.

Q&A portion: Miss Philippines Venus Raj answers William Baldwin's question.

For the question and answer portion, actor William Baldwin asked Raj what she did to correct a big mistake in her life. Raj said, "In my 22 years of existence, I can say that (I haven't had a major, major problem) because I am very confident with my family and the love that they are giving to me so thank you so much that I am here. Thank you so much."

    Venus, maraming salamat sa karangalan na hinatid mo sa ating bansa. Karamihan sa atin mga kababayan ay natutuwa at pinagmamalaki ka.     It's time for Stella Marquez Araneta to RETIRE. Not soon but NOW. There are a lot of stylish Filipinos who are willing to take over managing the local selection process for international pageants. It's time for a Filipino fashion designer to create a Filipiniana outfit and evening gown for a Filipina contestant.

    In retrospect, MVR had only 30 seconds to process and answer the question, that's a lot of pressure. The rest of the folks here have the luxury of rehearsing the best answer to Baldwin's question over and over. C'mon folks, MVR made it, she did NOT screwed up! She answered the question with poise, dignity and class. She'd come a long way, overcoming adversities, hardships and many life challenges. She's not born with a silver spoon in her mouth but one thing is for sure, this woman has dreams and determined enough to go for it. For those who criticize her answer, go ahead and pound sand! Nobody cares. Now let's roll the red carpet for the homecoming queen.

    Having braved controversy on account of her late-registered BirthCert and then overcome it to recover her beauty crown in time, MVRaj could have answered WBaldwin confidently:

    "The biggest mistake I may have ever made was omitting the inelegance of my complicated origins when I competed for the Binibining Pilipinas beauty crown. I corrected the mistake by personally declaring a sad truth about my humble international beginnings. Happily, doing the right thing when it became due worked things out wonderfully and so, thank you so much to my family for all the love and support, for here I am with audacity of hope to try to win as Miss Universe 2010!”

    Let us not forget that Venus Raj is a cum laude graduate of Bicol University - hands down she is both beauty and brains. So let us not hastily judge her intelligence based on a reply to a question which could have stumped even the best of us when put on the spot for 30 seconds flat under the scrutiny of millions around the world. Yes there was extensive mileage given to her pre-pageant training, but be reminded that this is upon the behest of network giant ABS-CBN mainly to drum up a sizeable audience for the airing of the competition. But Venus is far from being over-hyped - she is really deserving of our gratitude and adulation for a job extremely well done considering that her opportunity to shine on the global stage was almost snatched away from her by the ne'er-do-well poseurs of BPCI. BINIBINING MARIA VENUS RAJ, MARAMING SALAMAT SA KARANGALANG HATID MO SA ATING MGA PILIPINO. TUNAY NA KARAPAT-DAPAT KANG IPAGMALAKI NG ATING BANSA.

    @ engkris, YES. Opinions about diverse topics were asked from other contestants. For Venus, it was a question about a PERSONAL experience. It was tough! It is easier to share an opinion than to broadcast one's big mistake in life. The difference is MAJOR. LOL

    TITA AIDA: I completely agree with you. I also believe if the same question was asked to all contestants, VENUS would have a better chance. To prove this, try to answer the questions given to the other contestants. You will notice that that these questions are by far easier to answer.

    Venus was featured in the ABC News Tonight with Dianne Sawyer. Dianne said that whether at the pageant or at a job interview, it is one of the most difficult questions to answer on the spot. Then some news clips were shown. Would you believe, a reporter asked former President Bush the same question in one of his press conferences? Bush did not answer it. To prove a point, 3 randomly selected TV newscasters from the same station were not able to answer it too when asked the same question. Why? According to ABC News it is human nature not to broadcast any failures in life.

    correct!! napakaraming nag-mamagaling dyan, akala nman nila masasagot nila ng spontaneous yung ganung klaseng tanong.. dapat let's just all be proud of Venus, hindi na kelangan ipag-ulit ulitin pa yung mga words na nagamit nya to express herself dahil sa mixed emotions, pressure, nerbyos..atleast hindi sya na-tameme dahil mahirap nman talaga yung tanong and anyway it's done..and getting the fourth runner up in miss universe is not easy, yun ngang mga matatalino at MAGAGALING mag-english na contestants noon ni hindi nasama sa top 15 eh. nakakalungkot lang na kapwa pilipino pa ang humuhusga sa kapwa pilipino.. :(

    give the Girl a break, at age 22 ano nga ba naman ang "major mistake" na nagawa nya? mg adik? may sex tape? kayo kaya pumunta dun sa stage. she placed 4th out of 80 girls? whats wrong with that, its just a beauty pageant for gods sake. hindi ito ang makakapag patapos ng mga gera sa buong mundo at magdudulot ng world peace.     Hay naku ang dami talagang nagmamarunong dito. Mga ateng wag na wag nyong kakalimutan na kaya nyo naisip yang mga pagkatatalino nyong mga sagot sa tinanong kay Venus ay sa dahilang ALAM NYO NA ANG TANONG KAYA NAKAPAGHANDA NA KAYO NG SAGOT. Dyusme meron pang mga mega pasaway dyan na sinasabing major major fail ang blunder ng tao. Eh kayo kayang mga hitad kayo ang isalang doon sa Las Vegas stage sa harap ng libu-libong live audience at milyones na TV audience, sabay conscious ka dapat sa posing and posture mo para todo project pa rin kesehodang nangangalay na ang mga paa at likod mo, sabay mindful ka dapat na wag matisod sa laylayan ng gown mo (na kamuntik nang mangyari kay Venus doon sa long gown presentation ng top 10), sabay todo ngiti ka pa rin kahit ngawit na ang panga mo, sabay kailangan maisip at masabi mo ang sagot sa tanong sa loob ng 30 seconds lamang, etcetera. Sa totoo lang puro kayo kiyw-kiyaw na madali lang ang naging sitwasyon ni Venus during the Q&A dahil hanggang mga miron lang kayo na nagmamagaling. Pwe!!! Venus, congratulations sa yo talaga! As in! Pinaligaya mo ang buong sambayanan with what you have accomplished!

    She was asked about the biggest mistake she committed in her life. If she responded about her dethronement -- it would have been similarly an unsatisfactory answer. Why? Her dethronement is not the mistake she committed. It was the RESULT of her mistake of not providing complete/valid information to the Bb. Pilipinas officials, thus,she was earlier stripped of her title. She could have said, " The biggest mistake I did was not correcting information on my birth certificate when I first discovered it early in my life. This lead to my dethronement. However, I corrected that mistake, I was issued a passport, had my beauty title back, and here I am now, in front of you... proudly a FILIPINO!" But Venus, clinching the 4th runner up is already a big achievement. No. 5 out of about 80 beautiful women around the world? MAJOR MAJOR CONGRATULATIONS! I am so very very proud of you Venus.

    She was an obvious stand-out and surprised me when our country was called in the TOP 15. She rocked the swimsuit and evening gown however, I would honestly say, she didn't do that good as I expected her to be in the Q&A. She didn't give justice to her answer. it wasn't her answer that she did not have any major problem, but she wasn't able to support and stand it verbally, the best way possible. CONGRATS, anyawys. it wasn't meant for her...but I mean for a long time...we haven't placed. GOOD ONE VENUS RAJ!

This is how she should have answered it to touch the hearts of the judges and could have won: The major problem that I had is I did not bridge the gap between my father and my mother.     Pause, Think and Consider the following before you rate how Miss Venus faired in the competition;

    1. After 10 years, ngayon lang ulit napasama sa Top 15 ang Miss Philippines (Last time was 1999 Miriam Quiambao).

    2. In 1994 sa Pilipinas ginawa ang Miss Universe and the most that Charlene Gonzalez reached was Top 10.

    3. This year, hindi man lang nakapasok sa Top 15 and mga kilalang "Beauty Power House" na USA, VENEZUELA at INDIA.

    4. Tanging si Miss Philippines lang ang delegate from Asia Continent na nakapasok ngayon sa Top 15.

    Para sa akin 4th Runner-Up is already a big achievement.

    her dethronement was not her mistake, so this would not answer the question either. and i don't think for 22 years one has not made any mistakes in her life. that would be unrealistic. whether it b a small one, still it's a mistake. she could have thought of so many f she was not overpowered by her nervousness, obvious naman e. she lost her confidence there. sayang...!

    Argh, ikaw ang negative. We are talking here saan nagka problem...dahil we wanted Venus to win. Kaya, kung 4th runner up siya, we ask why? So, we discuss kung bakit nagkaganoon? Kung yong answer niya ang nakikitang naging weak point niya eh ano ang problem mo doon? We are not putting Venus down naman, we are just discussing. Not because we are discussing where it went wrong eh ibig sabihin negative na tayo, na we are not happy for venus na.     Sometimes, it helps to invent some answers, answers that people want to hear, that are expected, that have drama, that are colorful....even if they aren't true. That's why before the pageant, one anticipates the possible questions...and you scribble prepared answers... answers that people want to hear (they don't have to be true),answers that are expected and answers that sound right. Venus' answer was truthful yes, but it was not what the judges expected and wanted to hear...kulang. She could have made it to the top...but then it's not meant to be. Still, making it to the top 5 is a great achievement already that we Filipinos should be so proud of. To you venus, I offer my heartfelt congratulations. You made us proud.

    She should have just mentioned that her not being able to correct the discrepancy in her birth certificate was a great mistake...risking her binibining pilipinas universe title, etc....She can now correct it because this time she now have the funds to do that.

    Sometimes you have to give the answer that is expected even if it is not right. Being truthful with answering questions doesn't help you win.

    you deserve it venus.. if you only told them about your dethronement and how did you fight for it I guess you will get an extra credit for that answer..that's why you are there standing infront of million of peoples watching miss universe because you fought for it..many knows and that is what the judges wanted to hear from you.. anyway.. venus you have my support and you made us proud to be a filipino...kudos

    I agree with Restless... we are just saying that because we are not there answering the question. She did well! (on a personal note, i think she could have just answered that although she didn't commit mistakes, she was able to make certain things right, citing her dethronement and consequent reinstatement as an example) Go Venus! We're proud!

    She did exceptionally well on this competition. The Q&A can be nerve-wracking, Venus answer is truthfull and that tells a lot about her. She's very careful, confident, poised, beautiful and a go getter. To those who criticized her, just put yourself in her place in front of million people, the spotlight focused on you and answer a simple question instantaneously. It's not easy isn't it.
