Dead baby found in Superferry trash bin, two more abandoned babies found

Published: Sep 15, 2010 - 9:45am

Following the news about the baby abandoned in a Gulf Air plane, a dead infant was found inside a trash can aboard the SuperFerry 19 on September 13, reports ABS-CBNNews.com. According to the report, a utility man said he discovered the eight-month-old baby boy wrapped in plastic in the ferry's bathroom, while the vehicle was on its way to Manila from Cotabato.

SuperFerry officials turned over the mother identified only as "Maria" to the police in Bacolod City. "Maria," 30, told ABS-CBN News she was urinating in the toilet when she suddenly gave birth to the baby boy, who accidentally fell into the toilet bowl. She said she was wrapping him in plastic when she lost consciousness. When she supposedly came to, she said she found him stuck in the toilet bowl. Insisting her baby's death was an accident, she claimed her only mistake was not crying for help.

Inspector Jovy Cabcaban, head of the Bacolod City Police's Women and Children's Desk, said they will determine the real cause of death of the baby through an autopsy of his body. Police investigation showed that Maria has had three children, all of whom died in infancy, and that her relatives were unaware of her recent pregnancy. Maria may have a mental disorder, Cabcaban added. According to ABS-CBNNews.com, an infanticide case against her is being readied.

Meanwhile, two more abandoned infants have been found recently: a baby girl in Bluementritt, Manila and a baby boy in Pangasinan, according to GMANews.tv. Found crying inside a trashcan on September 13, the baby girl is now in a stable condition at the Chinese General Hospital. Police are still searching for her mother.

24 Oras reported on September 13 that a baby boy was found on a road, surrounded by ants, near a hospital in San Carlos City, Pangasinan. Residents who brought him to the nearby hospital said they found him with his mother who supposedly has a mental disorder. The baby boy's condition is now stable but doctors are on standby for possible infections.

GMANews.tv reports that 986 babies were abandoned from January 2008 to February 2009, based on data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The data cited extreme poverty as the most common reason parents leave their infants.

it is not just about condoms and pills, people needs to be educated to what will happen and what is happening today, so they would be more aware and be more cautious of these matters. which would you choose... promiscuous sex or killing humans?

@Rachel,rnrnSure it isn't perfect, but it isn't hell either. It's the leadership! to think that technically, Singapore just started in 1965! and they have licked those BASIC PROBLEMS & ISSUES!and we here in Pinas are still struggling with it? Talked about st*p*dity & moronism !

@Reverend: yep. im not saying this country is perfect, but it has found a formula that works well. it has its own share of problems (the sight of really old folks working is heartbreaking),but it has developed into a first world country in just a span of about 50 years. tayo, we're still stuck with the same issues and problems--like an exploding population.

@marj,rnrnSingapore's rose to first world status is no mystery. They have a kick-ass leader in LEE KWAN YEW, which the Philippines unfortunately lacks. LKY, doesn't believe in: Chewing gums, Western style Liberal Democracy, Liberal style rambunctious media, which we believe too much, The Communist Party, The Church and its meddlesome priests. They are HIGHLY SECULAR.For the critics of LKY here, EAT YOUR HEARTS OUT! You can't argue with success!rnrnWho do you think approximates LKY here? Gordon & Bayani?

@ Reverend, there are other entry points or other modes depending on his/her gender or sexuality. LOL. BTW, Singapore is a good case study. It's a combination of discipline, hard work, good government, topnotch education, and great quality of life. There may be too much government intervention but absolutely no Church power.

@ Rachel, absolutely correct. If jujueyeballs want the government or the Church or the select few to dictate how to use her uterus, then shame on her.
  • Rachel Sep 16 2010 @ 09:26am Report Abuse
@jujueyeballs: a lot of Singaporeans sleep around. they just choose not to have babies because it's expensive to have one. they're a pragmatic bunch. And they have access to condoms and pills. and abortion is legal as well.

jujueyballs said, "The only way to be SAFE is not to have SEX... AT ALL!". That's ridiculous if not laughable. We are not in the Dark Ages. Safe sex (education, responsible parenthood, right choices) is the only solution. Period.rn

    RH BILL!
  • Jackie Sep 15 2010 @ 01:33pm Report Abuse
  • Reverend Sep 15 2010 @ 01:04pm Report Abuse
As hot as today' Headlines! ano ibig sabihin nito? ANG IBIG SABIHIN, there are just sooo many UNWANTED PREGNANCIES, which coulda been prevented in the first place, by PRACTICING SAFE SEX.

  • ishtar Sep 15 2010 @ 12:06pm Report Abuse
this goes to show that there are way too many people, thus way too many poor people and crazy people. what has the church got to say about this? still no to sex education?
