From your sleeves to everything else, graphic design invades Manila for a week. Manila Design Week 2009 features local and international, established and upcoming graphic designers from August 8 to 15. See the best of Philippine talent in graphic design in print, web, photography, advertising, fashion and more.

August 8, Saturday (4 p.m. to 11 p.m.) at Bonifacio High Street
The Public Art Project kicks off the week with an outdoor art exhibit and live performances. Fifty artists interpret the theme Reuse, Reduce, Recycle; see their works on 5th Avenue and 11th Street. Design collectives PSP, Wee Will Doodle, 2720, Electrolychee, Caliph8 and KST paint murals. International designer Ron English incorporates his designs in the free recycled bags from tarpaulins, given away to people who recycle phone parts at the Nokia e-recycling bins.
At 7 p.m., watch a concert featuring Pinoy bands Up Dharma Down, Taken By Cars, Techy Romantics and Arbiewon.
The week-long exhibit is free and open to the public. At the end of the exhibit, the banners will be recycled into limited-edition tarp bags and wallets to be sold for charity.
August 10, Monday (8 p.m.) at Greenbelt 5
In Creative Collaboration, eight teams of the country's stylists, make-up artists, photographers, fashion designers and graphic designers create fashion editorials with the theme Beautiful Functional, the two basic tenets of graphic design.
Their fashion editorials are available as free poster inserts in the August 2009 issues of Preview, Cosmopolitan, FHM and Candy.

August 11, Tuesday (5 p.m.) at Glorietta 5 Atrium
Future Design showcases over 100 shirt designs from design students of the Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, School of Fashion and the Arts, First Academy, University of Sto. Tomas, University of the East, College of St. Benilde, La Salle and CIIT. Team Manila will produce the winning shirt designs.
At 6:30 p.m., a flashmob, open to everyone with markers and white shirts to draw on, draws together.
August 12, Wednesday at My Cinema, Greenbelt 3
In Design Dialogue, key figures from the fields of design, advertising, marketing and communication talk about the state and potential of graphic design. The panelists include Robert Alejandro, Nandy Villar, Teeny Gonzales, Melvin Mangada, David Guerrero, Jowee Alviar, Carlos Celdran, Julio Wallovits and Neal Oshima.
The conference launches the 20/20 project, a 20-point manifesto written by Design Dialogue's panelists and guests, and the 20-question Democreated Philippines project.
Robert Alejandro moderates and Angel Guerrero facilitate.
August 13, Thursday
At the Cubao Experience in Cubao Expo, see graphic design in exhibits, projections, music videos, album and vinyl art, motion graphics and CD packaging. View exhibits at Mogwai, Pablo Gallery, Heima, I Love You Store, Sputnik and Whitebox, and screenings by Furball, Acidhouse, Bluerain and Underground Logic.
Sandwich and Pedicab Drip, Pasta Groove and DJ Arbie Won perform. Make sure to bring your music phone or mp3 player to download free music and free album art at Nokia's XpressMusicHeadQuarters at Pablo Gallery.
Free admission for everyone. Gates open 6 p.m.
Over at the Greenbelt 3 lobby, Visuals with Vision by YOCard showcases over 150 postcard-sized entries in support of the National Bookstore Foundation Inc., Haribon Foundation and PAWS. The three winners will be published on YOCard in the fourth quarter of the year and will receive P20,000 worth of prizes.
The YOCard exhibit runs until August 16.
August 14, Friday (6 p.m.) at the Team Manila Jupiter Lifestyle Space
Celebrate the best of Manila Design Week with the Daily Grind 4 Closing Party. Caliph8 and Mark Zero provide the sounds and visuals. For an added twist, guests wear colored ID bracelets to indicate their field of work and relationship status.
August 15, Saturday
Graphika Manila 4 Design Conference (10 a.m.) brings graphic design icon Stefan Sagmeister to Manila. Other participants include Industrial Light and Magic, Brand New School, EverywhereWeShoot, Springboard and Adobo Magazine.
Hang out with the speakers at the 7 p.m. after-party at Mag:net Café in Bonifacio High Street.
At Alliance Francaise de Manille, VS2 Exhibit shows how graphic design is ever-evolving and makes a great platform for social change. Young designer groups showcase works that benefit two non-government organizations that champion the arts: The Farm Projects www.farmprojects.org and Outlook Pointe Foundation www.theopf.org. The artworks revolve around the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, which include issues on poverty, hunger, education, gender equality and more.
