Popular for serving Singaporean Chicken Rice since 1989 in Singapore, Wee Nam Kee opened its first branch in Manila at the Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati this week. The vibe of the local branch echoes that of a neighborhood coffee shop, staying true to its beginnings as a hawker-style business that has remained in the Wee family for years.

The ambience at the Ayala Triangle Gardens is better than its Novena Ville counterpart in Singapore--the local branch’s casual dining space has wooden tables and chairs and long couch seating lining the sides of the restaurant. But the menu lists the same dishes for which the restaurant is famous--come here for the Steamed or Roasted Chicken (a Personal Set served with chicken soup is at P168), tender and flavorful chicken best eaten with Wee Nam Kee’s chicken rice (P40 by the cup) and dipping sauces of soy, ginger and chili on the side.

Rice toppings (Roast Pork Rice, Barbecued Pork Rice and Wee Nam Kee Pork Chop Rice) start at P175, while other choices include Cereal Prawns (P375 for 4 pieces), Sizzling Hot Plate Beancurd (P255), Stir-Fried Baby Kai-Lan in Oyster Sauce (P180), and Sambal Kang Kong (P180).
