Top 10 Art Galleries in Manila
Manila Art Blogger calls the local art scene "busy, diverse, lively, and exciting."
Ten years ago, a gallery-hop meant a stroll down SM Megamall's fourth floor. With one or two exceptions, the row of spaces selling paintings made up Manila's gallery scene. Buying art and buying a t-shirt entailed pretty much the same process: you glance at window displays, and if anything looked interesting, you go inside and look at what else is in stock.
Five years ago, a worldwide art boom happened. Philippine art turned into a hot commodity and artists transformed into celebrities. Genres in visual art other than painting gained mainstream acceptance. With rising mall rentals jacking up their expenses, local galleries had to find more space to accommodate bigger exhibits. The established galleries soon dispersed to other parts of the metropolis, and at the same time, new galleries sprung up. Warehouses, abandoned offices, and old houses soon evolved into spaces exhibiting art.
These days, Manila's art scene is busy, diverse, lively, and exciting. Galleries have upped their professional ante, making urbanites spoiled for choice-a testament to why this SPOT.ph list allowed a three-way tie for its No.10 spot.
