What do you get when you mix a juicy spy novel with an Alfred Hitchcock classic? A gripping, Tony Award-winning comedic thriller known as The 39 Steps. This month, Repertory Philippines stages the fun, riotous play at Onstage, Greenbelt 1 in Makati from March 4 to 20.
Adapted from John Buchan’s espionage novel and the 1935 Hitchcock film, the story follows the adventures of Richard Hannay (played by Michael Williams), a hero with a stiff upper lip who comes face-to-face with murders, double-crossing secret agents, and distractingly gorgeous women. The play is brought to life by four actors who play a total of 140 characters in 100 minutes, which entails lots of frantic costume-changing and sometimes, playing multiple characters at once.
Liza Infante plays the three women Hannay gets romantic with while Ren Zamora and Juliene Mendoza play every other character in between. The play is directed by Ana Abad Santos. Show dates are March 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and matinee shows on Saturdays and Sundays at 3:30 p.m. All performances are at Onstage, Greenbelt 1, Makati City .
