Solar-powered soda bottles light up Laguna, "Mang Demi" featured on BBC News

Meet Mang Demi and hear his amazing story.

(SPOT.ph) Using plastic soda bottles, metal scraps, water, bleach, and a bit of Pinoy ingenuity, Mang Demi helps bring light to hundreds of dark shanties in Sitio Maligaya, San Pedro, Laguna. He’s now known as "Mang Demi Solar" in his community, and the environment-friendly alternative to lightbulbs are the talk of town-even landing him a spot on BBC News.

Social entrepreneur Illac Diaz’s My Shelter Foundation aims to help Mang Demi light up more homes in Sitio Maligaya with the pilot project dubbed "Isang Litrong Liwanag," an initiative that aims to install more of these water-filled plastic bottles in the poverty-stricken community where electricity is a luxury. Events such as the Halloween Fun Run in Cagayan de Oro on October 28 and the Adobo Run After Dark 2011 on October 29 in Manila will help raise funds for the project.
