Lea Salonga is in talks to join George Takei on Broadway’s Allegiance
Theater fans, rejoice!
(SPOT.ph) It’s been far too long since we’ve last seen Lea Salonga on stage-Les Misérables in 2006, to be exact. Fans eagerly awaiting her return to the New York theater scene can now keep their eyes on Allegiance, which she says she’s very much open to joining. She clarified, however, that things are still being discussed.
George Takei (the actor famous for his role as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek), spent part of his childhood in a Japanese-American internment camp and has said that he’s wanted to raise awareness about the subject since his teens. Allegiance tells the story of Asian-Americans who were imprisoned because "they looked like the enemy." The tale spans generations through the eyes of a Japanese-American war veteran looking back on his family’s time in a Wyoming internment camp.
This isn’t the first time Salonga has been part of the play, having portrayed the lead role Kei Kimura when the musical made its sold-out 2012 premiere in San Diego, California. The Broadway staging of Allegiance marks the first Asian-led cast of a musical since Flower Drum Song in 2002.
