(SPOT.ph) The Visayas has always had its fair share of artists, but the lack of access has kept some of them from getting the spotlight they deserve. Cebu Design Week, Inc. aims to address this by creating the first ever Visayas Art Fair. With artists and galleries from all over Regions VI, VII, and VIII, this is your chance to get to know the brilliant minds you might have slept on. The Visayas Art Fair will be held from November 26 to 28 at Montebello Hotel in Cebu City. But if you cannot make it on those dates, don’t worry. The art will be available for viewing online.

What to Expect at the Visayas Art Fair

With an outdoor exhibit at the garden of Montebello Hotel, the Visayas Art Fair makes the most out of the hotel’s sprawling architecture. Indoors, there are two adjacent halls that will serve as exhibition areas and one as a pop-up area for Cebu Design Week (CDW). The artwork at one of the rooms is a preview of an exhibit that will be shown at the soon-to-rise Cebu Museum of Contemporary Art.

Other exhibits of note are By No MEaNs and a Wenceslao “Tito” Cuevas Jr. retrospective titled Tito Cuevas: In Bold Strokes. The late Cuevas was an abstract expressionist painter who’s known for championing the style in Cebu. The former is a group show of 10 Visayan women and it  confronts the reality of systemic oppression that all female artists face. But we think that, as art is the vehicle of truth, the intersectionality of these 10 women goes beyond the art industry and makes a statement on the world as a whole.

There will also be workshops and events for you to join. You’ll have to pre-register online to secure a spot, so be sure to scope out the ones you’re interested in. Some of the most interesting ones are the Nude Drawing Session on the first day, November 26, and the Printmaking Workshop on the 27th. On all three days of the fair, there will be a three-part Art Writing Workshop. The Chocolate Chamber also has talks and demonstrations on all dates. Admission to these events are already included in your ticket for the day, granted you’re given a slot. Follow their Facebook page for a detailed schedule of events.
