MY WORLD: Leeroy New
Step into the mystical, grotesque, and larger-than-life world of award-winning artist Leeroy New.
(SPOT.ph) Award-winning artist Leeroy New's world is unlike no other. Practically creating a world of his own-a space filled with alien-like figures, fantastic sculptures, and larger-than-life installations, all of which are his creations, the 25-year-old artist known for his grotesque style has always been fascinated with drawing and painting. "There was no single event in my life that made me decide to be an artist," he said. "I just started drawing one day, like any other kid, and it just naturally progressed into this."
Schooled at the Philippine High School for the Arts and the University of the Philippines, New’s out-of-this-world art have been displayed in galleries and public places in Manila and beyond. He has participated in international art shows like the prestigious Fukuoka Triennale in Japan and the Singapore Biennale. In 2009, he was one of the three winners of the Ateneo Art Awards. Recently, he has been tapped to create sets and costumes for foreign and local movies and TV shows.
With strong influences from mysticism and science fiction, the multi-awarded artist's out-of-the-box pieces have also landed on the runway. Last year, he ventured into the world of fashion, creating pieces using unorthodox fashion techniques that stayed true to his artistic style-like his art, the "clothes" he made received rave reviews. What next for this talented young artist? "I'm working on new exhibits and film and fashion projects," he said.
