Born to doctors, Nona Garcia grew up spending her time at her parents’ small hospital in Marikina. While she was studying Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman, she felt a natural pull towards X-rays since she was in the hospital almost every day. She started incorporating these in her creative practice in 1999.

Garcia received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting. She has also participated in numerous exhibitions in Southeast Asia and Europe. In 2003, she was a recipient of the CCP’s Thirteen Artists Award; in 2000, she was the grand prize winner of the Philip Morris Group of Companies ASEAN Art Award in Singapore.

From UNEARTH

In her first international solo exhibit, False Apparitions in Valentine Fine Art, Singapore (2012), Garcia presented X-rays of several statues of saints. These were fixed on light boxes and framed in antique-looking ornate frames. In 2015, she showcased her landscape creations in a solo exhibit entitled UNEARTH at ARNDT, Berlin. There, she displayed her paintings that convey her current reality—in that case, having relocated from Manila to Baguio.

"Beyond"

How can one get a better grasp of Garcia’s vision (and prepare to take it in during the fair)? Through portraits, still life, and landscape painting, she quietly invokes silence and, yes, pain. They remind us of our extraordinary yet temporary lives. She’s known for her stark realism, larger than life oil paintings, and the glow of her X-ray prints. Though sober-looking, they actually bear vigor and spirit.

Stay tuned as we tell you more about the featured artists' bright minds as Art Fair Philippines 2016 draws nearer!
