Filipino Artist Draws the Avengers Using Metallic Sharpies
No paint? No problem.
With just metallic pens and his smartphone, artist Jeric Concepcion creates stunning impressionist portraits of Marvel superheroes. So far, he has finished 14 portraits of the main characters in Avengers, and intends to complete a total of 32 illustrations—including Thanos.
Concepcion started painting with Sharpie metallic markers when he couldn't go out to buy art supplies because of the pandemic.
"While cleaning my work room, I found a set of gel pens that was given to me a few years back by Janis McGeehan. I also found old illustration boards that have some sketches on it," the artist tells Esquire Philippines.
"The black side was empty, so I started experimenting on negative space drawing, meaning you draw the highlights first."
Up close, Concepcion's portraits look messy, but from afar, you see the order and mastery in the strokes.
"I call it chaotic order, because the portraits are very messy up close but have a strong likeness to the characters when you look at them from a distance,"he adds.
It takes up to six hours and a lot of gold, silver, and bronze ink for Concepcion to finish one portrait.
