10 Performances to Catch at dance.MNL

It's the perfect time to dip your toes in some classical ballet.



(SPOT.ph) Dance.MNL, a biennial dance fest, brings together the country's top dance artists on the stages of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Aliw Theater, and Star Theater. The two-week workshop series kicked off yesterday, June 14, while the performance week is scheduled to happen from June 21 to June 26.


Former Ballet Philippines Principal Dancer, Carissa Adea conducts Advance Classical Ballet for the Dance Intensive Workshop of Dance.MNL


Through the collaboration of Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theater, and Ballet Manila, dance.MNL promises to unite and celebrate the talent of more than 500 dance professionals from the Philippines.

The Winners' Circle

June 21, 8:00 p.m.

Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater)


Dance.MNL kicks off its week of performances with a gala celebrating the numerous Filipino dance artists who have made their marks on the local and global stage. The featured artists include Jared Tan (Atlanta Ballet), Christine Rocas (Joffrey Ballet), Candice Adea (Ballet MET), and winners of local and international dance competitions.



A Wanderer in the Night of the World

June 22, 8:00 p.m.

Aliw Theater Stage


UP Dance Company presents A Wanderer in the Night of the World, a dance narrative inspired by five poems of National Artist for Literature Nestor Vicente Madali (NVM) Gonzales. It is choreographed by Al Bernard Garcia, Michael Barry Que, Sarah Maria Samaniego, and Gebbvelle Ray Selga.

Eisa Jocson’s acclaimed piece titled Host invites us to experience and reflect on feminine image formation. The one-woman entertainment show displays forms of amusement usually associated with femininity and explores body politics in relation to labor.


Master Pieces

June 23, 8:00 p.m.

Ballet Philippines brings its highly celebrated repertoire back to its home stage. Master Pieces has been performed in the U.S., Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar, Jordan, China, and most recently, Korea and Indonesia. It features works by George Birkadze, William Carter, Augustus ‘Bam’ Damian III, Tony Fabella, Alden Lugnasin, Paul Alexander Morales, Carlo Pacis, and Ballet Philippines Founder and National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes.





Body of Work

June 24, 6:00 p.m.

Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater)


Body of Work is a mixed bill featuring the wide scope of Airdance’s choreographic pool. The program features works by Ava Maureen Villanueva-Ong, Mia Cabalfin, Jed Amihan, Rhosam Prudenciado Jr., Avel Bautista, Nicole Primero, and Ernest Mandap.



June 24, 9:00 p.m.

Bulwagang Francisca Reyes Aquino (CCP Rehearsal Hall)


Unearthing by Ea Torrado and Daloy Dance Company explores how the carnal and spiritual are linked and entangled. It premiered in 2015 through the Karnabal Festival and is set to be presented in Japan this coming July for Setouchi Trienalle and Asian Performing Arts Market 2016.






June 25, 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater)


One of the most beloved ballets of all time, Giselle tells the story of the kind of love that transcends even death. Artists of Ballet Manila will take the stage for the matinee, while the gala will feature a special tribute cast put together in honor of the Philippine dance icon and co-founder of Philippine Ballet Theatre Felicitas “Tita” Radaic. There will also be special participation by Philippine Ballet Theater and Ballet Philippines.


Dance Diaspora

June 25, 6:00 p.m.

Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (CCP Little Theater)


Manila’s diverse contemporary dance companies, independent artists, and internationally based Filipino dancers come together in a program presenting a cornucopia of dance talents. The performance opens with the dance film, Where the Light Settles, directed by AJ Orlina.




Generation Next

June 26, 2:00 p.m.

Aliw Theater



For dance.MNL's culmination, audiences will be treated to the performances of select dance schools from around the metro such as the Halili-Cruz School of Ballet and Maquiling Ballet, as well as the junior dancers of Ballet Philippines, Philippine Ballet Theatre, and Ballet Manila.


Ballet Filipino

June 26, 6:00 p.m.

Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater)


Manila’s three professional ballet companies unite in a program celebrating the best of Filipino dance and choreography.


Dance.MNL runs until June 26 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City, and the Aliw Theater, Vicente Sotto Street, Pasay City. Tickets are available at TicketWorld.
