Watch James Cameron's Avatar come to life

There will be puppets, viperwolfs, and Na'vis flying in mid-air.

(SPOT.ph) When James Cameron’s sci-fi movie Avatar hit cinemas in 2009, it was an immediate hit. It was set in 2154 when humans try to colonize Pandora, an earth-like moon in another star system, and eventually threaten the lives of the local tribe Na'vi. Avatar revolves around love for the environment, humanity, and all creatures in-between. These universal themes will once again come alive in Toruk: The First Flight—Cirque de Soleil’s first-ever venture into a movie-inspired show. It is scheduled to come to our shores on June 23 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“[Toruk] is a one-of-a-kind show. Through the years, we pride ourselves with being innovative and creative in redefining the live entertainment experience. Toruk is exactly that—with breathtaking projections, larger-than-life puppets, amazing acrobatic acts, beautiful costumes, and original music,” revealed Janie Mallet, publicist of Cirque de Soleil, in a press conference on May 24 at the Directors’ Club Cinema at SM Megamall. The entertainment company last came to Manila in 2012 with the extravagant Saltimbanco.

Toruk: The First Flight was created in collaboration with James Cameron who approved everything—from the well-thought plot to the colorful costumes, and the spectacular set. Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon, show writers and directors, even used the Pandorapedia to recreate this world in the Alpha Centauri star system and set the show 3,000 years before the events in Avatar. The story is narrated by a Na’vi (in English, so don’t worry if you can’t speak that language) who recalls how three boys on the brink of adulthood—Raul, Entu, and Tsyal—set out on a quest to the Floating Mountains to find Toruk. The mighty red and orange predator is believed to be the only creature that can protect the Tree of Souls and save the Na’vi from a terrible fate.

This Cirque de Soleil production premiered in Montreal in December 2015 and toured all over North America for 15 months. The Manila run is its debut in Asia.

Toruk: The First Flight runs from June 23 to July 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City. Tickets, priced from P1,500 to P7,368, are vailable through SM Tickets.
