Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag Is Now a Musical
It opens on September 30 at KIA Theater.
(SPOT.ph) Julio Madiaga has always lived in the province, until he tries for a better life by going to Manila. But it's not exactly happy ever after as he goes through the harsh realities of living in an urban jungle. Sound familiar? This is, after all, among the top 10 most stressful cities in the world, according to the 2017 Global Least and Most Stressful Cities Ranking by London-based company Zipjet.
Madiaga is a character from the 1986 Filipino novel Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag by Edgardo M. Reyes and the 1975 film Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag directed by Lino Brocka, but despite the number of decades that have passed, his story is still as relevant as ever. If you haven't read the book or seen the film, now's your chance to find out why it's still considered a valuable piece of Filipino pop culture: Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag, The Musical opens on September 30 at KIA Theater, Cubao, Quezon City.
Joel Lamangan directs this new masterpiece penned by Jose Victor Torres and Em Mendez, and Von de Guzman for the music. Douglas Nierras choreographs the show. Actors Sheila Valderrama-Martinez and Lara Maigue alternates for the role of Ligaya Paraiso, a role played by Hilda Koronel in the 1975 film. Arman Ferrer takes on the role of Julio Madiaga, played by Bembol Roco in the film.
Giving life to the other characters in the musical are Floyd Tena (Pol), Noel Rayos (Atong), Rafa Seguion-Reyna and Joseph Puducay (Imo), Aicelle Santos and Rita Daniela (Perla), Jim Pebanco and Joseph Billezar (Mr. Balajadia), Khalil Kaimo (Gido), Jeffrey Camanag (Omeng), Romcel Binquis (Benny), Randy Rey (Frank), and Dulce and Ima Castro alternating as Mrs. Cruz.
