(SPOT.ph) This 2019, we're treated to three Stephen Sondheim pieces: Company (staged by Upstart Productions), Passion (by Philippine Opera Company), and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street by Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group. And it looks like we're starting the year with more hits from the musical theater genius as Opera Juan stages Basically Bernstein/Strictly Sondheim: A Celebration of the Vocal Works of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim on January 11, 6 p.m. at Manila Pianos in Makati City.
The one-night-only concert will feature songs from West Side Story, Mass, Peter Pan, Candide, Follies, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, Company, and more. Performing these compositions are Nicka Karla Caliwag, Allison Rose Cervantes, Renz Nathaniel Cruz, Nerissa De Juan, Michael Del Rosario, Eden Lorrice Dumlao, Shanna Loise Garcia, Cris Go, Jeric Paul Lim, Aindrielle Madelo, Richard Moreno, Phi Palmos, and John Lemuel Salvedia. They will be joined by pianist and musical director Obel Alalong. Cruz and Phalmos are also directing the show.
Sondheim received a total of eight Tony Awards, including the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre in 2008, and five Laurence Olivier Awards. Bernstein has two Tony Awards and 16 Grammy Awards, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
