This Free Online Concert Will Play Songs From Jagged Little Pill, Wicked + More

This is theater in the time of COVID-19.

( While the COVID-19 pandemic caused theaters all over the world to close down and for scheduled shows to hit pause, theater communities have thought of bringing shows to the audience staying put in their homes through the beauty of technology. A couple of local theaters in the U.S. such as The Ridgefield Playhouse and ACT of Connecticut, are staging a musical concert on March 20, 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (March 21, 8 a.m. Philippine Standard Time); and anyone can watch through Facebook Live.

Featured artists include award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz (known for the 2003 musical Wicked and a bunch of movie musicals like The Prince of Egypt and The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Bryan Perri (musical director of Jagged Little Pill), Sam Gravitte (Fiyero in Wicked), Matt Farnsworth (Munkustrap in Cats), and many more. You don't have to worry about the actors violating "social distancing"—a practice that's highly encouraged in this time of the pandemic—as ACT Artistic Director Daniel C. Levine explained in a video that they'll be seated at least eight feet away from each other all throughout the show.

In a statement, Levine said that "The goal of this livestream performance is to keep Ridgefield audiences engaged during this time of physical separation and to give some relief to the town. People still need to be entertained and we want to assure everyone that, despite this temporary period of isolation, art and culture in Ridgefield will still thrive. We may just need to change the way that we enjoy live performances temporarily. We are hoping that this performance will be a bit of a launch pad for a town-wide 'streaming platform' for all arts and cultural organizations in our town."

Recommended Videos, in an online chat with ACT of Connecticut, confirmed that the live stream is available to anyone, anywhere.
