(SPOT.ph) Chalk it up to a one-time obsession with a little telenovela called Meteor Garden and a boy band named F4, but it's not hard to guess why plenty of Filipinos feel an affinity for things Taiwanese. Ironically, it isn't that uncommon to keep the misconception that Taiwanese cuisine doesn’t stray too far from Chinese, either. If you think you fall into that category, consider Taiwan on the Rise at Xin Tian Di in Crowne Plaza a gastronomic eye-opener.

Available through the whole month of October, Taiwan on the Rise offers a taste of some of Taiwan’s most popular dishes, prepared by Chef Sam Lee. Chef Lee admits, "Street food is very common in Taiwan, so a lot of what we know of Taiwanese cuisine is from the different types of street food available there." Of course, there's also their shaved ice dessert, which bears a resemblance to our own halo-halo

Among the Taiwanese specialties at Xin Tian Di this month is the Pan-fried Oyster Cake with Egg, a pancake-like dish with a deliciously toasty flavor from the egg and a sauce that reminds us of Singapore chili crab with subtle hints of aligue, the edges providing a slight crunch. Main course offerings that should not be missed include the Deep Fried Eel in Hong Ghao Sauce, which features eel fried to perfection in a light breading that’s not at all greasy; as well as a signature Taiwanese dish: the Deep-fried Tofu, which combines crunch and a sweet, citrusy, spicy tang from the sauce that also boasts a delectably subtle peanuty taste. For dessert, try the shaved ice with red beans, taro balls, and sago for a chewy, sweetly satisfying treat.

Taiwan on the Rise is available from October 1 to 31. Diners also get a chance to win two round-trip tickets to Taipei and a four-day, three-night stay courtesy of Cebu Pacific and Holiday Inn East Taipei.
