(SPOT.ph) It’s difficult to put a finger on Forget Me Not Cafe. From the outside, it’s something of a cross between an old-school coffee shop and an ice cream parlor. Three steps in is a roofed al fresco area that would call "tea time" to mind had it not been for the rather posh black fountain on the wall. Inside, the walls are painted dove gray with dainty yellow stencils of its namesake flower. There’s a hodgepodge of black swivel seats, a black couch, and white picnic chairs. Mouthwatering photos of food line one side-beside romantic black and white images of children and animals. It’s a laidback randomness that’s comforting and so reminiscent of home.
Forget Me Not Cafe is run by mother-and-daughter tandem Mary Jane and Hana Rebaldo. "My mom designed the place while I manage it," said Hana, who’s set to run the restaurant full time after she graduates. Her mom, who loves flowers, also selected the floral theme apart from creating the recipes (later reinvented by a chef).
Chef or not, however, the American and Italian favorites that make up the cafe’s menu are still homey. The mashed potatoes (P45), very creamy and flavorful, have yummy chunks much like mom’s. One must-try is the Salisbury Steak (P125 to P145, paired with either rice or mash), a comforting, old-fashioned dish updated with a slight peppery kick. The Stuffed Chicken Breast (P125-P145), on the other hand, a roulade of beautiful chicken breast with mushrooms and greens, is made utterly delectable by the same brown sauce. The perfectly fried chicken adds a subtle crunch to the tender stuffing.
For dessert, we’re partial to the Lava Cake (P105). It’s a dessert that fills your mouth with sweet, rich, super-moist, chocolatey goodness. It’s a cafe to remember, yes, but this cup-sized dessert might just make you forget everything.
