(SPOT.ph) There's no doubt that the rotating restaurant along Eastwood will attract a slew of interested customers. First, because it revolves, giving you a 360-degree view of Metro Manila, and second, perhaps more importantly, it showcases Chef Jessie Sincioco's (Le Souffle, Chef Jessie, and Top of the Citi fame) culinary capabilities for Northerners.
For something as attention-grabbing as a revolving venue, 100 Revolving Restaurant keeps the gimmicks at a minimum inside. No stifling accessories or kitsch, leaving nothing to distract from the view. During the day, the floor-to-ceiling glass windows offer guests an unobstructed glimpse of everything from the nearby skyline to the distant Laguna de Bay. At night, it morphs to become a visual entertainment of lights. Perhaps the only things that can distract from the ever-changing sight is the arrival of the food.
The menu at 100 features some of Chef Jessie's specialties from her two other endeavors. The reason, she says, is that "the people who will be dining here are loyal clients and they will be looking for their favorites." She adds: "Like when we opened last July, some people looked for their favorite salad in the menu and so I had to include it." But it's the 100-specific dishes that will serve as the measure of what this new restaurant has to offer-and they're already proving to be surefire hits.
The Balut Surprise (P300) is one of them. Encased in a parsley-speckled dome of hot-off-the-oven puff pastry, the aroma-even before you slice it open-is reminiscent of a bustling bakery early in the morning. The crust has a crispy golden blush that hides an equally fragrant balut within.
The extensive menu-though not final-lists down a range of Black Angus Steaks and Chilean Sea Bass, but there are also dishes like the Pan Fried Goose Liver Salad, Wild Rice Risotto, Beef Roulade, and Lapu-Lapu Cordon Bleu. The Assorted Seafood Gambas (P850) is a heartier version of the much loved shrimp dish. Perfectly cooked scallops and fish fillets join the company of plump shrimps and sit in a pool of velvety sauce that's deep and robust in tomato flavor. Garlic rice and steamed vegetables balance the dish and make it a perfectly filling meal. It's also noteworthy that the dish is served on a warm plate, a detail many restaurants overlook.
Many people have come to love Chef Jessie's soufflés, but at 100, she lays out more than 10 flavors to choose from. But despite the popularity of her renditions of this French dessert, the Revolving Tortas are slowly but surely inching their way to the spotlight. The Macapuno Torta (P250), served in individual portions, has a light-as-a-feather butter cake base that is crowned with a generous layer of macapuno; the entire confection lays in a puddle of pandan sauce for a refreshing dimension of flavor. It's the type of dessert that happens to you, and one that you'll crave in the days to come.
100 Revolving Restaurant may offer a dining experience that's quite unique and, well, moving. But more than the panoramic bird's eye view of the metro, it is chef Jessie's clean and unpretentious food that will leave a lasting impression on everyone's palates. The novelty of her venue is a draw, but Chef Jessie's talents in the kitchen are tried, tested, and time-honored.
