(SPOT.ph) The long history of bento tells a story of how convenience—as the Japanese understand it—has evolved. Today, the sectioned-off boxes are synonymous with school lunches, picnics, and vending machines at train stations. But outside of Japan, it’s special; it’s almost ceremonial to us. And there is something truly special about the way the Japanese imagine and create food, ranging from silky raw fish to torched, tender meat. At Izakaya Sensu, you can get the best of both perspectives with their quick and easy Bento Boxes, available from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily—and you can have a different one every day of the week if you want!
The most affordable box is the Chicken Teriyaki (P350), promising tender chicken with a savory-sweet glaze, but you can kick it up a notch and go for the crunchy route with the Kara-Age (P375) set. But if you feel like treating yourself and really want to push the boat out, so to speak, the Sashimi (P595) and Sawara Saikyo-Yaki (P620) sets are just the thing—the latter is a broiled Spanish mackerel that goes perfectly with the accompanying rice and miso soup.
Each set also comes with dessert, so you’re in for a complete treat!
