Confirmed: Mister Donut Is Closing Their Greenhills Branch

(SPOT.ph) If the iconic youth flick Bagets 2 is turning 40 this year, then you could say the similarly well-loved Mister Donut branch in Greenhills is about the same age. In fact, the latter is one of the many locations for the 1984 film which famously launched the movie careers of Francis Magalona and Ramon Christopher. But while Viva Films might be throwing Bagets 2 a party later in the year, Mister Donut, that beloved corner doughnut and coffee shop in the Greenhills Shopping Center, will no longer be around after January 31.

Mister Donut Greenhills closure:

Mister Donut Philippines confirmed the news of its closing Tuesday, saying the outlet will indeed be saying goodbye “along with other tenants in the area to give way to the redevelopment of Greenhills Shopping Center.” The announcement was met with messages of sadness online from people who have at one time or another, over the past four decades, have made the branch a meeting place, a hangout, a part of their morning ritual. 

“That’s a favorite hangout of old timers,” says Devi de Veyra, a Greenhills resident for many years. “I used to watch these elderly gentlemen having coffee and donuts just engaged in leisurely chika. I would buy doughnuts there too, and have their coffee—which is very good, I must say.” 

“After college, when my friends and I had no work, diyan kami tatambay sa gabi,” says Malou David who lives in the area. “There were so many law students and doctors there with us. In the morning, joggers naman.” 

“When my father used to visit from the States, I would walk from my place in Annapolis with him and we’d have coffee together. He was actually the one who turned me on to Mister Donut coffee,” adds De Veyra. “That corner is the spot claimed by those elderly in clusters... teritoryo nila amidst the gulo happening all around Greenhills. It’s their quiet space.”

“It’s bittersweet to hear all the social media comments about the closing,”  Cherry Peña, General Manager of Mister Donut in the country, tells SPOT.ph. “It’s heartwarming to know that the brand has played a part in their lives.” 

Mister Donut arrived in the Philippines in 1982 and the Greenhills coffee shop was one of its early branches (franchising to Filipino entrepreneurs began in 1983). Dotted with restaurants, video arcades and even bars and discotheques, Greenhills was the center of youth activity in the early 80s, much like Poblacion today. Which is likely why it was a favorite spot for youth films: the original Bagets, the Gary Valenciano-starrer Hotshots, and the cult classic The Punks among them. 

Today, Mister Donut has more than 4,000 “points of purchase” in the Philippines. To formally bid its patrons goodbye, the Greenhills branch is inviting some of its regulars on the 31st of January, closing day, to treat them to coffee and doughnuts and thank them for their loyalty through the years. As for the branch’s staff, Peña tells SPOT.ph they will be reassigned to other outlets.
