Taste Test: Dunkin's New Mint Chocolate Donuts, From a Pro-Mint Chocolate Gal

(SPOT.ph) The mint + chocolate combo gets a lot of hate, with those on the hate camp frequently lamenting its "confusing" sum, or how it basically tastes like toothpaste. And with that, Dunkin' has made the curious decision to come out with Mint Choco doughnuts. As you'd expect, this new product has gotten plenty of attention on social media, mostly from the antis of the bunch leaving sardonic comments on Dunkin's post. (The author, a proud mint chocolate fan, insists they don't know what they're missing.) Regardless of where you fall within the spectrum, the question remains: how do these doughnuts taste like? Can this newly minted (heh) variant please those who genuinely enjoy mint with chocolate, or even convert the non-believers?

Dunkin's new Mint Choco doughnuts

First Impressions

The coffee and doughnut chain describes their new Mint Choco variant (P50/piece) as a "mint chocolate coated [doughnut] topped with peppermint kreme and sprinkles"—pretty straightforward, really, though what more does a chocolate-mint treat need?

The doughnuts themselves take on a simple look with green sprinkles over the choc-topped pastry, and a (literal) centerpiece of a swirl of green icing (presumably, the peppermint kreme). Expectations more or less meet reality when compared with the promotional poster—from the ratio of chocolate to sprinkles to kreme, to the colors. 

First Bite

This author isn't necessarily the biggest Dunkin' stan (unless we're talking about their glorious Butternut doughnuts), but must admit she was pretty happy with this one. This coming from a casual doughnut chain, our expectations were modest; it's a given that they're not gonna be using the highest-quality dairy or chocolate or whatever else. 

Still, these hit the spot. The chocolate could be darker and is ever so slightly oily, but it's also not too sweet. In some spots between the chocolate and doughnut layers, though oddly not mentioned in Dunkin's description, are what seem to be mint-chocolate hard candy bits; these add a cooling, minty sensation and crackly crunch to the mix (we wish there were more of it!). 

You've also got the peppermint kreme in the center—which could use more mint and is on the greasy side, but comes at just the right amount that it enriches these fried pastries' dry dough base. Fret not, mint-chocolate skeptics; these doughnuts' very mildness keeps it from tasting like, well, toothpaste, and the overall sensation remains within general crowd-pleasing territory.

All in all, this chocolate-mint fan wishes for darker chocolate and maybe more mint (she'll stick to her Dynamite candies, York Patties, and Lindt Intense Mint, thanks)—but is dang pleased with these treats nevertheless. To be the real cool kid on the block, we say pair yours with Dunkin's Iced Americano; its robustness and cold temp are just the thing to bring out the best of the doughnuts.
