Taste Test: San Miguel Launches Limited-Edition Chocolate Lager

(SPOT.ph) If you haven't had the chance to crack open a can of beer to celebrate Oktoberfest, we gotcha, fam! San Miguel has released something that’ll make your sweet tooth happy: a limited-edition chocolate-flavored beer, aptly named the Chocolate Lager. Yes, you read that right—chocolate and beer come together for one hell of a creation. The combo isn't new exactly, but how does San Mig's version fare?

What you need to know about San Miguel's new Chocolate Lager:

This limited edition drink is a dark lager, which is a type of beer that's very bubbly, light, and malty, but with "Chocolate Flavor." This drink only has 4% alcohol by volume (ABV), which is on the lighter side of beers, it's even a percentage lower than a can of San Miguel Light Beer.

According to its "official" description, also known as the description printed on the can, this is a "full-bodied dark beer that has a rich, dark chocolate taste and subtle caramel notes, topped with a creamy head that brings out a delectable roasted malt aroma." In descending order, the ingredients include water, malted barley, sugar, corn, caramel (color), natural and artificial flavors, hops, and citric acid (acidity regulator).

This was initially launched in other countries like Thailand, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. It was launched in the Philippines last September 23 and, according to San Miguel Beer's Facebook page, this will be available until March 31, 2025.

What does the San Miguel Chocolate Lager taste like?

Right off the bat, the Chocolate Lager actually smells like a chocolate drink more than it smells like something that can give you a buzz. But don't be put off by the sweet scent: You can still taste the beer despite the cocoa-y notes. In fact, it doesn't taste as if the chocolate supports the malty and acidic taste of the lager rather than overpowering and masking the beer, resulting in a sweet carbonated chocolate drink.

As someone whose go-to is gin and tonic, San Miguel's Chocolate Lager in comparison smells and tastes... harmless, for lack of a better word. Finishing a can or five is no problem, at least for me, especially with a bowl of salted chips on my other hand. But, of course, everyone has different tolerances, so, please, for the love of drunk texts and booty calls, always drink responsibly.

Should you buy a can of San Miguel Chocolate Lager?

San Miguel's Chocolate Lager isn't for everyone. I feel like San Miguel had beer drinkers with a sweet tooth in mind when they created this limited-edition canned beer. If you're the type who orders sweet beers like a Butterbeer or chocolatey cocktails like Irish Cream Whisky or a Mudshake, this is right up your alley. Otherwise, you can always stick to your usual Pale Pilsen or Red Horse.
