Now Open: Hattendo at SM Mega Fashion Hall, Mandaluyong
Sorry Nicki, but cream buns are the best kind of buns.
(SPOT.ph) Hattendo first made its presence known last March, when boxes of the stuff were sent out for a sort of taste test. Inside, it was an assortment of the softest buns filled with flavored cream: mango, azuki bean, chestnut, custard, whipped cream, matcha, and mango.
That was months ago, and finally the Hiroshima-based bakery has officially set up shop in the Philippines. It's just a little kiosk across Uniqlo in SM Mega Fashion Hall. While the buns themselves don't look any different from what we have in local shops, even when it comes to sweets, it's the inside that matters.
The buns are more soft than fluffy, with a slightly sweet note characteristic of Japanese bread. The filling is an incredibly airy cream that conveys the flavor without being cloying. They're imported fresh from Japan, which we think explains the price. It's P118 a bun.
Hattendo also has a kiosk in SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City.
