This winning dish will soon be part of California Pizza Kitchen's menu
Filipino flavors reigned supreme at the very first Pizza Wars.
(SPOT.ph) CPK Philippines has crowned its pizza chef for its first ever Pizza Wars. The in-house competition, adopted from their US counterpart, kickstarted with a store level elimination with one representative each advancing to the semi-finals. The grand finale showdown featured the top three chefs with their original recipes using only the restaurant’s ingredients.
Finalists Romel Panaligan, Lea Castillones, and John Oplejeda had a friendly cook-off .
Romel Panaligan from California Pizza Kitchen’s Alabang branch took home the title along with the P25,000 cash. His winning combination included roasted squash as the pizza’s unlikely base with toppings like mozzarella, grilled eggplant and zucchini, cherry tomatoes, and dessicated coconut. Aptly named The Farmer’s Choice, Panaligan won over the judges (which included celebrity chef Rolando Laudico) with his creation’s unique flavor paying homage to Filipino food fare.
The much coveted Pizza Wars title comes with the dish’s introduction into the gourmet pizzeria’s official menu. The Farmer’s Choice will be making its first public appearance in August for the restaurant’s annual celebration of National Pizza Day. But we’ll have to wait just a little bit longer for its permanent slot as one of CPK Philippine’s pizza offerings scheduled on the last quarter of this year.
