New Restaurant Alert: Smokin' Cues at White Plains, Quezon City
The folks behind Bawai's Vietnamese Kitchen go rustic...and around the world.
42 Katipunan Avenue, White Plains, Quezon City
Open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
(SPOT.ph) Like any hole-in-the-wall, Smokin' Cues requires a bit of legwork before you're rewarded. Tucked in the perennially busy street of White Plains, you need to keep an eye out for a bright orange sign that points you to the little hideaway. Friendly servers usher you inside, where you're treated to a momentary reprieve from the bustling traffic.
Casual, unassuming interiors
Diners can also opt to eat al fresco
It's like a subtle nod to the Spoonstories team's other (and more recognizable) culinary venture, Bawai's Vietnamese Kitchen (incidentally, just a stone's throw away from Smokin' Cues). Both restaurants feature modest and laidback interiors, steering your attention to the main event. The menu is a conservative selection of food, but instead of focusing on one cuisine, Smokin' Cues takes a trip around the globe with its roster of barbeques...a total of six modest options.
What they serve fresh off the grill are dishes stripped to its bare essentials, but uncompromising in terms of flavors. No need for additional sauces here! The Japanese barbeque (P180), for instance, is a plate of chicken yakitori skewers, tender, glistening in a sweetish glaze, and browned at the edges for a slight crisp.
Paprika-spiced Beef Short Plate
Diners have two options when they want to go American: the Kansas City-style Pork Belly (P215) is a heavy plate of pork belly, smothered with whiskey sauce, but the staff highly recommends the Paprika-spiced Beef Short Plate (P185). The latter consists of smokey morsels piled generously on a plate, saving you the effort of tearing the beef off the skewers. Meanwhile, the Moroccan barbeque (P215) is a plate of pan-grilled dory slices marinated with cilantro, soft and flavorful with every bite.
Each barbecue dish comes with a hefty bowl of rice, but don't let that stop you from ordering sides. Trust us when we say you'd want a bowl of Twister Fries (P105) all to yourself. The fries are paired with a garlic parmesan dip and once dunked in the sauce, become downright addictive.
Mango and Golden Lime Granita
Satisfy your sweet tooth with their small selection of desserts and zero in on the Apple Pie (P90). Instead of a warm slice of pie, you get a deconstructed version of it: A bowl of thin apple slices layered with cream and topped with crumble for a welcome crunch. Make sure to dig your spoon deeper to scoop up every sumptuous layer. The Mango and Golden Lime Granita (P65) is lathered into a bowl, but we almost wish it came with its own alcoholic cocktail.
Smokin' Cues proves you don't need fanfare to make a statement. The flavors speak for themselves—no matter the country.
