(SPOT.ph) Unit 27 Apartment Bar + Café is your piece of the New York brunch scene in Manila. Every bit of it mimics typical brunch spots in the Big Apple, its interiors effortlessly piecing together contemporary furniture, quirky fixtures, and versatile color palettes.
“Our place is really set up like you’re in New York,” says Rambo Nuñez Ortega, chief marketing officer of the newly minted café-cum-bar. “We hope to give the full New Yorker brunch experience. Brunch is associated with comfort and for us, we want this place to be [anyone’s] second home.”
The Unit 27 experience is simple: in the morning, fuel up with some grub as you get cozy in one of their spots, then come back at the end of a long work day to rest and recharge just as you would in your own home. Rambo says, “Here, [one] can come in, play music, have a drink, and invite some friends over.”
Very urban home
A place for everything, from breakfast till the next day
They partnered with several brands including Jack Daniels and Converse, so their VIP room is Jack Daniels-themed and their bar has an interesting sneaker fixture.
Guests can dine and unwind at any one of Unit 27’s three floors. The first level takes on a homey café format, the second a compact bar-style dining area, and the third a modern pub with dimmed lighting and blaring music. When taken together, the scene makes for a house party—just as the owners had envisioned.
The brunch café/bar also doubles up as a showroom. Furniture is for sale. Guests can request the catalogue if interested.
The transition from brunch café to full-on venue for house parties is a fun, novel idea that the owners want to introduce to the curious Manila crowd. So while the new hangout is situated at a relatively quiet area in the city, one would be surprised at the turnout it’s been receiving to date, only a few weeks into launch of operations. Unit 27 is run by a group of colleagues, headlined by Francis Flores, and co-owned by Rambo, together with Ryan Flores, Mike Carandang, Francis Tolentino, Duy Baltazar, Ping De Jesus, Michelle Punongbayan, Cristalle Belo, Francis Libiran, Arsi Baltazar, Henry Chan, and Pen Roque. Rambo says of the mix, “It’s mostly a first venture for everyone. We come from different fields.”
Interiors were a collab with Space Encounters.

The chefs of the group, Francis Tolentino and Duy Baltazar, collaborated to bring familiar favorites to the table. They recommend that you jumpstart your day by sampling any of their all-day brunch specials which include the Jack Daniel’s Aussie Bacon & Egg (P495), double smoked thick-cut bacon strips, glazed with a special barbecue Jack Daniel’s sauce and served with a side salad, wild rice, and a sunny-side up egg. Some more favorites in the roster include the Longganisa Trio & Egg (P380), a collection of cured sausages served with rice and a salad, Pinoy Steak & Egg (P370), marinated Angus strips served with rice and egg, and the Bagnet Breakfast (P395), pork belly served with pako salad and sukang Ilocos.

If you are recovering from some intense partying the night prior, they offer a handy fix: the Anti-Hangover Bacon & Eggs Rosti (P420), homemade potato rosti and bacon served with rice and eggs, which you can pair with their Anti-Hangover Shake (P275), a cool, refreshing mix of cucumber and apple flavors, or a glass of their House Blend Iced Tea (P145).
Snack items are also available, like a range of omelettes—Skinny Veggie (P260), Shrimp & Garlic (P350), Hi Protein All-Meat (P350), and Truffled Ham & Mushroom (P330)—and sandwiches. Breakfast Chori Burger (P285) and Spanish Sardines + Spicy Tuyo Combo (P320) are immediate standouts.
If you are in the mood for a sweet start, they have pancake/waffle options such as the Classic (P220) served with the traditional butter and maple syrup combo; Peanut Butter & Banana (P280), three layers of pancake/waffle served with glazed banana slices and Reese’s peanut butter chips; and Chocolate, Salted Caramel & Bacon (P280), a jumble of everything nice: Nutella, salted caramel, and double smoked bacon.

When you come back at the end of a long, stressful day at work, know that Unit 27’s drinks are ready for battle. They recommend that you start off with The Initiation (P500), a sampler of their best shooters, before shifting to the Red Bull Blue Vodka (P259), one of their bestselling signature cocktails, or the Love Potion (P350), a fruity cocktail popular among the ladies.
Pair your drinks with any of their signature bar staples: Adobo Salpicao (P320), House Party Nachos (P495), or Cajun Sausage Prawns (P395).

Looking beyond their impressive lineup of treats and drinks, Unit 27 hopes to offer a day-to-night experience unlike any other. “We really want to establish ourselves as a staple. We don’t want to be just a fad,” says Rambo. “We want to create something homegrown but world class.” By the looks of it, the new kid in town is already on the right track.
