10 Best Things We Ate in January

Noteworthy dishes in this food-filled month

(SPOT.ph) If you didn’t already know, here at SPOT.ph, we love food. You need it to live, but we find that there are some dishes that go well past the virtue of necessity. While others content themselves with a deep fryer and the usual salt and pepper, there are some who make—or at least try to make—an art out of it, with delicious displays and even yummier flavors. We believe those that go above and beyond their duty deserve necessary recognition. So here are our top picks among the dishes we ate throughout January.

Bizu Creperie's White Coconut

Next to flavors like chocolate and strawberry, you might overlook the coconut, but this is Chef Xander Tangco's prized dish. The gorgeously minimalist crepe boasts the same perfecty crisp pancake as the others, but it's filled with slightly sweet desiccated coconut that's flourished with lemon juice. The overall flavor reminds us of summery pineapple. On top, vanilla ice cream and crushed toasted crepe!

Bizu Creperie is at Eastwood Mall, Quezon City. Read more about Bizu Creperie

Crunchy Crab's Shrimp BLT

We're always fans of tasty dishes that fly under the radar. The Shrimp BLT is Crunchy Crab's number two—after the Instagram-renowned Soft-Shell Crab Burger—but we're totally impressed by the flavor this seemingly simple sandwich manages to pull off. The shrimps (offered by weight) are seasoned in fiery cajun spices and covered in panko. We love how they cook the bacon flat and crisp, emphasizing that solid crunch.

Guisados' Tacos

We stopped to think that maybe our desperation for a taqueria in the North gave us false feelings for this Congressional joint. But no, these babies are just darn amazing. In fact, we can't even choose one particular flavor because we eat here by the menu. If you want something straightfoward and unfailing, the Beef Barbacoa is for you. If you want a comprehensive little treat, get the Chorizo and Egg, which is like breakfast in a tortilla. If you want something sinful, try the crunchy Chicharron. We can go on and on.

Atelier Vivanda's Custard

In a fairly simply brown hue and a scoop of sorbet on the side—the presentation of this dish does absolutely nothing to prepare you for the flavor ahead. This custard won't smack you in the taste buds with flavor. Instead, it's perfectly nuanced, beautifully creamy, and not at all sweet. The crisp phyllo base gives you all the change of pace you need to skip overwhelming your palate, but we also appreciate the citronella end note of the sorbet.

Mr. Diggins' Black Bay

Mr. Diggins is what happened when two popular food stalls got together and said, "We'd even be better together." It's where soft-serve ice cream and waffles unite in the most out-of-this-world fashion. The menu is small, so it's no easy feat to pick a favorite. We're going for the chocolate. The Black Bay is a deep, dark spectacle. Get the chocolate soft-serve to really drive home that intensity. It's embellished with chocolate syrup, popcorn, and, of course, a nice, fluffy waffle.

Mr. Diggins is at Box Park, 73 Congressional Avenue Extension, Quezon City. Read more about Mr. Diggins.

Diner on 16th's Soy Ginger Glazed Chicken and Ube Waffles

It sounds unorthodox and its brownish-purple hues definitely wouldn't win in a beauty pageant against the golden-brown discs we're accustomed to. Still, flavor is king and the nutty-sweet taste of purple yam works with the brightly seasoned chicken. It's a cool Asian twist on a Western classic.

Fat Butchik's Cookie Dough and Vanilla Ice Cream

While we commend Butchik Adiviso's wonderful cheese sausage, his carefully prepped smoked pork belly, and that ridiculously hard-hitting cream cheese soup, it's his dessert that really punched through our expectations and knocked them out of the park. It has a creamy cookie dough base that's beautifully blended so you don't get any lumps, bumps, or stubborn sugar crystals. It's white chocolate, but not overly sweet. The whole thing is topped with homemade ice cream that he made sure would remind you of your favorite fast-food sundae.

Fat Butchik's is at 346 El Grande Avenue, BF Homes, Parañaque City. Read more about Fat Butchik's.

Pasha's Sultan Kebab

You have to be "in" to know about this dish. It's off-menu and has to be ordered in advance. The Sultan Kebab is a gloriously simple setup—unresisting cubes of fragrant lamb sit in a throne of creamy mashed eggplant, guarded by grilled vegetables. You're welcome.

Pasha has branches at General Luna Street, Poblacion, Makati City; and Makati Prime Citadel Inn, P. Burgos Street, Poblacion, Makati City. Read more about Pasha.

Poulet Manille's French Country Classic Chicken

Chicken is a very versatile protein, so we can understand why this restaurant decided to pour all their focus on this humble star. Poulet Manille offers so many ways to enjoy this fowl, but to really be able to test—no, taste their mettle, try their most basic creation. The organic French chicken is flavored only with amber butter, lathering on just the prefect amount of spices to perk up all the natural aspects of the poultry.

Poulet Manille is at LG/F SM Aura Premier, Bonifacio Global City. Read more about Poulet Manille.

Peperoni Pizzeria's Bacon Miele

We'll say it time and again—have a great crust and your pizza is half amazing. Peperoni's wood-fired ones are crunchy and smoky, which makes them a great canvas for toppings. One favorite is the Bacon Miele, which is uncomplicated and satisfying. They use Gouda cheese, which packs a more defined punch, and the bacon is boosted by that sweet smear of honey. Yum!
